Apple iWatch vs Rolex

I have a feeling I'll be wearing two watches at some point soon. Does anyone else wonder if their Rolex might have to spend some extra time on the winder in the near future?

I carry a blackberry which gets between 50-100 emails a day on average (depending on what's going on), so it would be nice to just glance at my watch when there's a beep rather than having to take out my phone every time just to see who the sender/subject is and whether I want to reply right away.

Hideous. I'll save my wrist for a wrist watch. If I need email so bad that its on my wrist then I'll quit my job. Whats next? Maybe Apple can just wire my email directly into my brain.

I'll bet every watch I have that whatever Apple comes up with will NEVER look like that.
The one in that article is just a speculation and it looks like it was built using technology from a decade ago!

As far as the watch goes, if I am correct, Apple filed a patent for a "wearable display" and the watch part is as of now 100 percent speculation.

Seriously, Johnny Ive would never allow such a hideous design to bear his name.

However, to answer your question, whatever it is, when it is, I will probably want one. I am weak when it comes to Apple stuff.

Will it have an ETA movement? Because I don't want to pay apple prices for an ETA movement.

Great! Another piece of useless technology for people to play with when they are driving.

Oh, yeah! I would love to pay a $1,000 for a watch that will be obsolete in less than five months and worth $50 on Fleabay.

Well the nanos have an attachment to a bracelet and are quite popular. I have seen quite a few people walking around with them so to think they are not going to be popular is silly. This may not be for the general TRF membership they do fit into a sizable consumer base.

I guess I'm too old school.

I'd rather not, I enjoy a good old fashion mechanical watch.

I like gadgets so I will buy one. I dont consider it a watch but more of a micro music player/gadget. Its a on the go information piece that happens to tell time. Same way a iphone is a information gadget that happens to make phone calls. You have to put in perspective what this is. Comparing this to a Rolex is like comparing a Segway to a Porsche 911.

I only wear Rolex...or Suunto...or GShock if I ever get around to purchasing one during my weekly Sam's Club excursions.

100% this. Plus Omega.
Apple never ceases to amaze, but I just won't put down any of those for an iwatch. I guess this is the real reason they discontinued the nano in the small configuration.

Wow... I was thinking this exact thing when I read that article... the mechanical watch WIS-type people is definitely a minority breed (dying ) Today's generation is all about smart phones, smart watches, not wearing an item that simply has one function (tells the time). I fear for our passion of mechanical timekeeping pieces in the future.

They'll bury me with my Rolex on.... but by that time, it might be the last one in existence.

I know guys as young as 16 who are mad for watches and it's not just a few. They'll still be buying watches in 50 years.

Not many people are gonna say "I was going to get a Rolex then I saw that great iWatch so I bought that". They might say "I was going to get a G-shock but got an iWatch instead". It won't have any effect on the mechanical watch market if you ask me. They are too different.

An iWatch - interesting concept. Pretty soon, they'll reduce a SIM card to the size of a pinhead and drop that into a wrist device as well, making it a true Dick Tracy type of gadget. For me, being able to surf the web and get my email on my phone - when I have to - is more than enough. Too much connectedness will drive you crazy.

When I first got into mechanical watches, I did so because I wanted something relatively maintenance-free. I got tired of dealing with battery issues. Only later did I grow to appreciate the movements themselves. Should I ever find myself on a desert island - by choice or by circumstance - I know I'll have at least one device that won't require an outlet: my watch.

Sorry, going forward I only want mechanical watches on my wrist. I do not need a watch beeping and blinking every few minutes when an email comes in.

I am not knocking it, its just not a necessity. Not to mention that mechanical watches are the last great things that do not need batteries/wifi/etc. It is an art that has been around for hundreds of years and not changed much.
