Well, I've been running around madly for the last few days looking at cars ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous!

It one I want is a Defender 90 but, as is always the way, it's priced at more than I wanted to spend. I've made the guy an offer so now I just have to sit back and and see what happens...

Coming up to the end of the year, car salesmen need to get cars sold by the end of March to get their bonus, have you thought about going to a dealer and twisting arms Mark?

Land Rover approved used cars are just out of budget unless they are beyond poverty-spec!
The guy I've made the bid to is a one man band but he told me himself he had far too many and needed to get them shifting...
He had a few that were in budget but he made the mistake of showing me a beauty that was more money. If I hadn't seen it I would probably have bought one of the others but, after it, the others fell into the "ugly mate" category!

As an aside, how's that Canada Goose going? I see you've got snow forecast tonight.

Looking forward to snow Mark, mind, I'm working this W/E and driving down to PWOG at 0530 in the morning, that should be riveting.

Sounds lovely... Wrap up warm! What you need is a land rover!

Say hi to WO2 Matravers for me, if for nothing other than to see the confused look as he tries to work out who the hell I am!

Defender 90 would be excellent (awesome toy) but isn't the wheelbase a bit short for towing? Can't imagine it bring very stabil with a load. Maybe a 110 would be a better idea.

Fair point but my heart is ruling my head a bit.

I tried a 130 yesterday... What a beast! Alas, I'd have had to spend as much to make it nice as it would cost to buy. (plus the Long-Haired General said she wouldn't drive it in a month of Sunday's so I'd have to crawl home from the pub!)

Seriously, just stop talking. You sound ridiculous, especially with no first hand experience.

Looks are subjective, but everything else isn't.

They benchmarked the performance SUV world, handles like a sports car (yea that's terrible engineering let me tell ya) slow? Yea the GTS turbo and turbo s are freaking slow .. Right , even the cayenne s is pretty quick, terrible on gas? Again you don't really have a clue

Seems like the more appropriate vehicle for the OP would be a truck, if towing is going to be a primary use.

For the record, I have a 2012 BMW X5 diesel and a 2011 Audi S4. I own the X5 because I have a family and need a larger vehicle for road trips and so forth. It's not the prettiest thing to look at either, but it's pretty good on gas mileage, comfortable, yet still feels nimble at autobahn speeds. My other option was an Audi Q7 diesel, but in the end I liked the X5 more overall. I looked at the Benz ML class as well, but couldn't stand the interior. I never even drove it. Land Rover models never entered the picture.
Sorry if my post sounded a bit harsh. I didn't mean to, but sometimes I get carried away. Although I never owned one I've been quite a big Porsche fan myself, but can't see myself driving a Cayenne or Panamera if I'm honest. I think the X5 diesel makes a good choice for your requirements and in it's current form one of the finest if not the finest SUV for road use on the market today.

How long is the trailer? Single axle or dual? Trailer brakes? Pictures?

14' body (plus hitch), tri-axle. No electric breaks but drums activated when it pushes on the back of the towing vehicle.

I've done a fair bit of towing over the years and I would be worried about the Defenders short wheelbase. Given the length and weight of your trailer, any decent side wind is going to "wag" that RR quite a bit.

I can't imagine if you looked a bit there isn't any decent used full sized American trucks available in the UK? We may not be great at building euro spec'd performance vehicles but no one builds work trucks like we do!
