Should I trade????

I am new to TRF. I currently own a 2006/Sea-Dweller D-ser# that I received as a gift. The watch is near perfect, it has no scratches on the band, and wears very tight, no stretch in the band. Just a great looking watch. The watch was purchased second hand from a local jeweler in my area, and has no box/papers. Just the cert. appraisal.I was looking for a SS sub w/date but my wife thought this watch was a sub. Nonetheless I really like the Dweller now.

I have the opportunity to trade my watch for a 2007 SS sub w/date Z ser# with the box and papers, and minimal scratches on the band. I would be doing the trade with chris_nor_cal. Does any person have an opinion for me? We also live 3000 miles apart so the trade would have to be NDA through FedEx.

Personally speaking i would never trade anything that was given to me as a gift but that's just me. If you really like the Sub and it makes you happy then go for it

Personally, the trade sounds fine. I really like the SD, but the Sub will always get my vote.
If you really wanted a Sub, you will forever have it on your mind. I say do the trade...

So, your wife gets you a rollie thinking it a sub but turns out to be a SD. You really want a a sub. She cant tell the difference, so trade it. She may never know..... I would do it in a heart beat.

If it were me I would keep the SD and buy a sub later if I still felt the need. It is a gift from your wife and that makes it special. She may say she doesn't mind but I still wouldn't do it. Nothing wrong with having more than one Rolex.

I agree, sub is iconic, but SD rocks. If you want the Sub, sounds a good trade.

But a gift adds that extra something

My wife bought me a SD as my first Rolex. I really wanted the Sub and she didn't know the difference. She just wanted me to be happy with what I got. Maybe that is the same deal here.

MRDI and frostie, what do you mean when you imply that you should own subs before a SD? I just bought my father a SD for x-mas (his first rolex) and was wondering if I committed a Rolex faux pas. Thanks a lot. Also, this is my first post on TRF.

your situation is this: Your wife thought it was a corvette, but she bought you a Ferrari!! Keep the SD man ... a sub you can get any time anywhere ... I would like to be in your situation ...

If you have not handled a sub wit date before, believe me, it will feel lighter after handling the SD .... if the DS is your first rolex, then the SUB might be a disapppointment, if you think all rolexes have to be this heavy, cause you can feel the diff between them...

Congrats on your excellent taste in getting your father a Rolex (and a SD no less!) for Xmas. Admittedly I own a SD and am crazy about it, but I think that your father would like either a SD or a Sub. But I'd recomend giving him the option, as a wristwatch is a very personal thing. The SD wears a bit heavier / bigger than the Sub (thicker / heavier), so it's a personal choice thing.

And welcome to the Rolex Forum - an excellent place to spend some "time".

I went through a similar situation with my wife when she graduated from her Certified Management Accountant (CMA) Program back in 2000. The family got together the money and bought her a nice two-tone TAG-Heuer dress / diver with a white face. I thought that it was a nice-looking watch.

After a great deal of hesitation and with substantial trepidation and concern (about hurting my feelings) she expressed her reservations about the one I had choosen for her. She hated the white-faced dial and instead liked the one with a patterned gold face, which was a little more expensive (approximately $200.00 more). Needless to say, I took her back to the store and she picked out the one she wanted. It was more important to me that she get what she wanted vice what I had picked out for her. I wanted her to look at the watch on her wrist and take personal pleasure and enjoyment from it because of the accomplishment it represented and the pride it represented in her from her family; I did not want her to look at it with a sense of bitter-sweetness / obligation that she had to keep it, even though it was not what she wanted.

No sense in being less than completely happy with something which is so personal, important and that will be around a long time. I would go with what you want (the Sub) vice something that your wife will never know the difference about. But if she would notice the difference, then stick with the SD and buy a Sub later. I'm a coward when it comes to my wife, BTW (especially right now with her being pregnant!), although the fact that she's two inches taller than me and a better shot certainly plays into that, as well.

Anyway, just my thoughts. Good luck with your decision.

You are not the only one who afraid of wife. I used to go out kick some big bad black belt ass in the tournament easily. But, come to my wife who is event smaller than me. I couldn't win an argument with her even I am right. We all know who is the boss. Do we?

Egelber, I agree with Frostie. A gift should not be traded but it's your call anyway. Second, you will find that after sticking around this forum you will realise that the SD is an icon and this is the reason why many Sub owners own an SD as well or are intending to (that goes for me also). Dude, you got a free SD! Keep it and then get yourself a Sub. That's what I would do. You will have two watches so each one of them will get some wrist time. It will be easier on the watches and you'll have a Rolex collection :)

(You'll also be able to point out the subtle differences between the models - so she won't make the same mistake next time... )
