Why Rolex ,my retrospective.

You know the days you wake up, and go to put on your watch before you head out to work or play,how easy to forget what most of us have the privilege to own.

Today I thought about mine. I normally pick out my watch for the day depending on what mood I am in. I usually dress the same for work so there are not many days I have to decide to go dressy or not.

I picked my DD today. As I got to work I started remembering the days of how I longed to own a Rolex. Any model. It was the watch I knew I would own one day. I remembered how lucky I felt when my wife bought me that plain, smooth bezel, non date oyster with the jubilee bracelet and white face with black romans. It was for my 30th birthday. I could not keep my eyes off it. At that time I did not think it would be my first Rolex, it just seemed it was the only Rolex for me.

It's now 16 years later and I feel very fortunate to have my watch collection that I now own. It is sometimes easy to forget how I came to collecting watches. It was through having a Rolex. With that joining forums like this one. I became more educated great timepieces.

As I look at my Rolex collecting, I realize to some people we are out there. To some others, even who come to this forum, we are blind by the brand. I have to think, yes there are many other watches out there. There can be arguments on what brand is the best, even to the point that some trolls may pop in and slam us for the Rolex name. Still to me, that little crown means something to me. Not exclusivity, not pertinaciousness, but tradition.

I have gotten many of my friends and family members to buy a Rolex. I think for no other reason than consistency and knowing you can rely on one.

In closing I have to say that Rolex is still my favorite watch and most likely stay that way. I hope other feel the same.

Mort, every once in a while someone posts who makes me stop and think about what the brand and the ownership of the watch means to me. Thanks - too often we forget just how lucky we are to own what others can only dream of. By the way, nice collection! How about pictures?

Nice post Mort! I agree that sometimes it's easy to forget how lucky we are to own just one Rolex, let alone more...and there IS something about that crown. My favorite watch as well!

Agree 100%. I put on my TT DJ tonite just because I haven't worn it for a while. The weight and overall impression of quality is unmistakable. They really are something special. You can't explain it to someone who has no passion for watches!

As my Rolex-collecting-carreer is somewhat shorter also the story is shorter.
When I asked my wife to marry me I had a Rolex (1950s YG) as present, not a ring as would others.
After she said yes, it was time for me to search for my first one, unfortunately this was a fake. But the months after I started of collecting and in the meantime I reached the quantity of 50.

Regretfully, no. To get the DD I have now, I spent 13 years trading up. Every couple of years I would take the watch I had and a couple of thousand dollars and get the next one. When my wife bought it for me, she intended for me to use it as my first stepping stone to better ones.

I had a set back(car jacked, shot and robbed) in the mid 90's and had to start all over again.

It wasnt until I had the DD I have now, that I started buying other rolex's and other watches in general. The DD was my ultimate goal for Rolex.

As I look back now, I do wish I still had the first one. Maybe one day I will find its twin and buy it.

Thank you Mort. Posts like these affirm our individual decisions to purchase, and more importantly, own (a) Rolex watch(es). After taking my son to day care, as I was walking out to my car, I looked down at my watch (yes, it's only the 3rd day), and smiled as I saw the little gold crown in the beautiful blue dial. I have friends who could buy a Rolex, PP or other fine watch as easily as I would buy a set of tires. However, for those of us who WORK to EARN a Rolex (or multiple watches), there is something extremely satisfying about the day we do, and continues. It was a stretch for me to buy my wife's when I got mine, but well worth it. No regrets.
