Question about the DD

I Have a question about my recently acquired day date. After I set it to the correct day, date and time, I push the crown in to screw it down. Some times it screws down fully while other times it seems to stop leaving about a mm of space. I have also noticed that when I unscrew it it seems to pop out as if it. Is on a spring. My GMT IIc does not exhibit this. Any ideas?

I think it is normal when the crown on its first setting and is pushed down to feel like a spring. Also, my rolex crowns do not sit flush against the watch ever. There is always a little space when looking at it from the face side down.

Not sure how it screws down all the way sometimes, but not others.

Maybe post some pics for the experts?

The winding crown is a 2 part spring-loaded stem, now when pull it out to the wind position and push it in, it releases it from from the movement so you can screw it back down. But only screw down just finger tight no force is necessary in most cases will not touch the case thats with a good unworn seal. There is a O/ring built into the crown if you apply to much force you could damage the O/ring seal or cause premature wear on the crown seal.

I would think that O/ring mentioned above wears out periodically. Every five or six years which, I believe is rolex recommended service cycle? O/ring will wear sooner if one fiddles with it a lot. just my 2 cents

. It should never screw down fully.. If it does the gasket at the top of the crown will not seal against the top of the tube... It does not "seal" against the case...

. Normal to pop up.. As mentioned, it is indeed spring loaded..

Think of the crown as a (upside down) socket wrench.. When you press it down it disengages from the stem so that you can screw it onto the tube.. When you unscrew it from the tube, it pops up - engages in the socket - and the spring holds it in place there so you can turn the stem (with the now engaged crown) and wind the watch..

The case tubes on rolex need replacement from time to time. They do seem to wear out. You should feel it rest against the gasket in the crown, if not, it may not be sealed when closed. You may want to have it checked

As posted above all normal. There should be a small gap when the crown is screwed down. The "pop" is normal.
