That is a GOOD snake. It looks like a Rat Snake or Black Racer. It is a vermin eating, beneficial snake!

I didn't hurt him at all, I like snakes and I'm well aware this is just a black snake. I walked him off the cart path (on the golf course) into the woods to make sure no one runs him over by accident.

Excellent! I hate to see people get excited and hack snakes to death before knowing what they are doing. Snakes help keep mice and rat populations and disease to a minimum.

Just had a rat snack in my driveway a couple weeks ago. He was about the same size too. I let my little girl look at him for awhile and let him go on his way.

Used to see these in my Grandfather's barn, near Shelby, when I was a kid. Never saw any rats.

Snakes. Why'd it have to be snakes?

We have a Gardner snake that lives in our front yard. Every now and then I'll see him sunning himself.

actually, if you check the link Olav posted, it's a rat, or black rat snake, commonly mistaken for a black racer. either way, he was pretty cool.

Yes, the California Black Racer has three thin yellow stripes running along their backs, don't they? See image I took while camping last year. CIMG0153.jpg

I understand some people don't like them, but I think snakes are incredible and beautiful creatures.

Last summer we had one of those small green snakes living in our backyard garden. When we were kids we used to catch the Ribbon, Gardner and those little brown snakes...it was really rare to find those small green snakes so it was cool having one in our garden. Where my brother lives in the Ozarks in South Western Missouri they have Rattle snakes, Diamondbacks along with small Black Scorpions and many more critters(I had a baby Diamondback pass by me within 6" of my bare feet by their front door a couple of summers ago...not real happy about it either...now I'm very careful when we visit)like Armadillos.....and last year they had a Bobcat in a tree by their house in the country.....

Back when I was finishing up college in 1978 I bought a baby Boa Constrictor that was only about 16" long and it was hard finding newborn mice at the pet shop to feed it. My wife made me get rid of it when it got to be around 4 1/2 feet long. A couple that had a store selling Cactus and other Succulents traded me some plants for it as they were going to have it in their store as a pet and conversation piece!!!

Take it easy.....Leo

We have no snake in Hawaii! Except a few people I know! But I won't go there. However not sure if you knew this we do have Black Widow spiders, and small white scorpions. Watch out when picking up 2x4's!

Aloha from Kauai
