10:10 Official Time for Advertising Photos
I just noticed that all watches on Rolex's website are set to 10:10. Is there some significance to why they picked this time? ie. easy to see the writing on the face?

It's just to more easily display the dial.

I agree....it shows off the dial, but if you look, almost every watch brand displays that same time of 10:10, not just Rolex......it would be interesting if someone knew exactly why though.

Definitely not just Rolex. Another reason it looks good is because it's symmetrical and obscures less of the dial writing than just about any other position.

It must be hell on the photographers knowing they only have one shot at the photo.

I assume they just set the correct time, pull crown, and then wait for the power reserve to die.

I keep all my watches that are not running at 8:20. Very traditional place to stop them Insofar as Rolex, it shows the watch better - nothing blocked.

9:9 would better show the dial.

I pull the crown out and photograph it like that, then push the crown back in digitally in photoshop. As far as 10:10 and/or 10:08, it is done for several reasons. 1. symmetry. Our eye likes a balance of left and right. 2. Tends to allow the writing on the dial to come through. 3. Makes the watch look like a smile. 4. The hands take the shape of a chevron/check mark which is pretty much a universal symbol for "approved".

It is also a good way to tell if the watch for sale photo you see has been hijacked from a Rolex ad or Site..

Actually, it's even more exact than just 10:10.
It's 10:10:31. On the 28th. For the bulk of the shots, anyway. I've noticed that Glashütte Original likes to shoot their watches at the 10:08 position with the second hand either just above or well past the date window, which is usually at the 4 o'clock position. On the 25th.

Funny that you should mention this, Chris.
Because I am going to make a thread about it in a short time. But with variations to the 10.10.31.

Except that the date would be obscured by the minute hand.

A bit off topic but a true story.
When I was in college, I worked part-time at a Mom and Pop office supply store (this was before the era of the big box Office Depot/Max, Staples, etc). After lunch time on Fridays when no one was looking, I would set the office wall clock ahead five minutes. Since it was Friday, everyone would want to leave ASAP so at 5 o'clock (really 4:55) it was like a stampede for the door. I would usually hang back just long enough to reset the clock back ten minutes, giving me an extra five minutes to get to work Monday mornings. I would then reset it for the correct time at some point during the day. This worked remarkably well. Have a good weekend, everyone.

ERR that would be 9:15.
IMO Rolex only ever took one pix at 10:10 on the 28th etc....and photoshopped all the others.
