I visited an uncle today... His dad, recently deceased, used to own a watchstore where he sold and repared watches for the most part of his life. This old guy was the sort of person that never throws anything away so when he sold his store to a swedish chain he still had thousands of watches, clocks, pens etc. in the basement of his house. A lot of these watches weren't even picked out of their original boxes. They just lay there brand new. My uncle took home a large cabinet containing 4000 wristwatches and pocketwatches! And that was just a small part of what the old man had in his basement...

They already shipped off approx 300 swiss made watches to a swedish auctionary firm...

I got the opportunity to check out his cabinet and look at the watches and it was truly an owerwhelming experience. I found so many watches I wanted to take home. I found watches from Oris, Bulova, Omega, Zenith, Longiness, Seiko and others. He didn't sell Rolex I'm sad to say... I particularily fell in love with an Oris dresswatch from the 70-ies (I would guess) and a 24 k gold Omega (dont know which model...). He had 5 of the Oris watches I wanted. All in mint condition, brand new, never worn, never been picked out of their original boxes!!! Some people are so lucky... I told him that I really was interested in that watch and a few others and that I wanted one when he and his brothers had decided what to do with all the watches. We'll se what happens. Hopefully he'll give me one or sell it to me really cheap.

Kind of beats my sewing box, huh?

Why didn't you make some pics? I would be amazed if i would ever be able to see 4000 watches in one place. That's really interesting

He is married to my mom's sister. We are not blood relatives.

As the OP said, the watches belong a relative by marriage and he hasn't received a single Timex as of yet. Why don’t you sell a few to the group on consignment?

Estate sales are a gold mine of rare and NIB stuff, especially if the deceased was an officer for a large high end company. One thing FleeBay is good for the airs of a decadent often dump his treasures it took a lifetime to collect for a quick buck as they have no emotional attachment. I mentioned the sterling Tiffney mechanical penile I bought for $25. One of 100s of silver object that was being dumped from an estate.

yup it may not be the OP's inheritance but i feel that to be able to see so many watches at one shot is not something all of us will have the opportunity to see.

and also he may have first dibs on some watches (i am just guessing ha ha)

so regardless, i still think he is a lucky guy !!

That's what I am hoping for. The guys who have inherited the watches are not really interested in them since they have grown up with watches around them everywhere. They rather seem to think that they are a problem and something they must get rid of. Especially the thousands of alarm-, wall-, shelf clocks they have inherited. Given the enormous amount of clocks and watches they have in their posession, I sort of hope for some charity...

Maybe, If I'm lucky, I can get hold of some vintage models I can sell so I can buy another Rolex...
