Necessary to use watch winder

Hi Guys, When do we need to store a Rolex in a watch winder?

What's the benefit? Will it prolong the movements inside the watch, compared to winding normally?

Never. There is no benefit. A watch winder keeps a watch wound.

I actually had a chat with a gentleman at a store and he told me that by putting his watch on the wonder caused it to break. This was likely a 1 in a Million case, but hey, you never know.

Whats the benefit. None unless you are too lazy to wind and reset watch.

Will it prolong the movement.Well doubtful if its working movement is wearing same as when on wrist.But if a watch is left on a winder 24/7 then it could need more service that one that's left to rest till needed to tell time on wrist.

Winding crown.Well that's what the crown is for winding and resetting the watch and that's why Rolex still puts a winding crown on there watches.

The only real benefit is if you have multiple watches and you wear different ones each day, then you won't need to set the time or date on them.

Or if you have a watch with multiple complications (annual calendar etc..) then it may be useful as well.

As far as "prolonging" the movement, not sure what you mean by that.
Whether you wear the watch 24/7 or put on a winder or let sit in a drawer for a year and wear it occasionally.
Just get it serviced 5-7 years....and your movement will be "prolonged"

I agree! I have a GMT2, and I love the watch but its a pain in the butt to set because I have to look up the 2nd time on my phone then set it, then set home time and date. So a winder helps.

IMHO, i feel that a watch winder is a total waste of time and money, unless you have plenty of watches and rotate them differently everyday.
it may even cause more wear and tear between mechanism, when it is being kept running non stop 24hrs a day for 365 days a year.

I have a Rolex for the past 17 years without a winder. Today it is still keeping good timing.

If you have only one luxury watch, a watch winder is over kill. They are meant for people who have many expensive watches. A winders purpose is to keep the watch in motion to keep the oil at optimum performance. A winder is also nice because it reduces wear and play on the crown, but like I said, you only need to worry about that if you have more than one watch.

Actually a winder isn't necessary to maintain modern oils and while it may preserve the crown/tube it does cause unnecessary wear elsewhere.

This wear stuff on the crown and crown tube is little more than one of the many Rolex Internet myths.There are thousands or even millions of manual wind watches with screw down crowns Rolex included.Now they got wound up daily for decades without problems.And today crowns and crown tubes are just normal serviceable items, and are often changed as part of normal routine service same for the mainspring.And the oils optimum performance will make no difference on a winder, on the wrist, or stopped with the modern synthetic oils used today.The more the movement is working then that very very tiny amount of lubrication just a few drops of oil you could fit on a couple of pin heads is starting to break down.Today they use mainly use Moebius Synthetic oil very expensive stuff but even that will still break down its lubrication properties with a constant running movement use over the years.

I'm not a winder guy either, just don't have the need. If the watch I want to wear today isn't running I just wind and set it. Personally I like the interaction.

Although there was a recent thread about being buried with your Rolex. Now if I decide to do that I will probably get a winder.

Not necessary. I had a wolf winder and sold it after about a month.
