Rolex movements are based on ETA??

Hi guys:

i'm confused if Rolex movements are in-house made or based on ETA movements?
i've been collecting for almost 13yrs now and i've thought Rolex uses the in-house movement, but i had a conversation with Hublot assistance boutique manager and he was telling me Rolex is based on ETA not all in-house even with Daytona 4130 movement?

did i miss something here?
he also told me that he has been in watch industry for about a year and kept telling me that Rolex uses ETA and that's why Hublot started using ETA and now switching over to Unico.

Certainly confused he was. At one time the Daytona sported a Zenith movement - but that's changed and is now 100% in-house Rolex.

Where there is a tiny shred of truth is this: ETA and Rolex and others often use components that are from outside suppliers. Like the KIF shock system until Paraflex came out.

Also, they tend to lift each other's designs for components, too.

So the shred is this: All Swiss watch movements share a lot of the same DNA in the gene pool.

He is either trying to spook you into Hublot, or he is lacking passion on his day job.

Rolex make their own movements, Tudor use modified ETA movements.

I have vintage Rolex with ETA movement but to answer your question no modern Rolex uses an ETA movement.

Rolex movements are there own design except chronographs before 2000 as then Rolex had never made a chronograph movement. As they used movements from ETA Valjoux from the 1940s till around 1988/9. Then they used a ebauche movement from Zenith in the chronographs from 2000 on the cal 4130 in-house designed and made. But some of the most collectible and valuable Rolex watches don't even have a Rolex made movement in the case but ones form ETA Valjoux .

This has probably been answered a few times but my research hasn't got me the information, would you be able to tell me when Rolex stopped using Zenith movements in the Daytona and ETA movements in their other watches?

EDIT: Peter beat me to it, thank you for the information guys!

No way, today all Rolex movements are their movements produced all in-house including the balance and mainsprings.

I guess that is why he is at Hublot coz he id dead wrong about Rolex.

Just to get facts straight, Rolex uses in-house movements with the most patents and chronometer certificates issued on their movements compared to any other brand.

Tudor uses ETA movements though that makes them affordable (vs Rolex) but by no means ETA movements are a pushover.

Unico ? I have no idea about them.

Well there are still some movements being produced with the KIF and Nivarox made hairsprings, but eventually they will be all in-house.But as far as I know they still out source the making of mainsprings, but its possible that Rolex have bought up that factory manufacture now.The Luminover on the paint on the dials at one time came from a factory in China. But the Chinese factory moved production to Switzerland then the name was changed to superluminover but same material.

Go to a Rolex AD, they're not much more knowledgable in a lot of cases. Ask them about Hubolt...and see what they have to say.

You should change from your Hublot local dealer... He's definitively stupid !!!
Rolex latest caliber to be not fully in house was the Old Daytona 16520 with Zenith El Primero caliber.
At least all calibers for the automatic "oyster perpetual" collection are Rolex inhouse.
Some Rolex, like the Cellini's range might still have calibers based on other makers, but not sure.
