I've said it before and that article alluded to it. The smart watch won't replace the watch because it won't even replace the cell phone. And as long as you continue to use your phone you don't need an iwatch at all.

Yup, a gimmicky thingammabob.
It's not a mechanical engineering marvel, that's enough reason for me. |

Not ready for prime time now, and perhaps not ever.

The Smartwatch doesn't currently interest me, though I've never been an early adopter for gadgets. It took me ages before I bought my first Smartphone.

No thanks. I fail to see why smart watches are the hip thing that tech companies say we all need to survive. Kinda like Google glass but dumber.

There’s a weird dichotomy on TRF between people unsure/discomforted by new technology whilst simultaneously scrabbling for the latest Apple product :P

I suppose that's true in just about any social set, but I don't think that's the thing in this case. I don't see anything about the smart watch that I'd consider new technology really. What is going to be different about it that isn't already in a phone/other device or could be? Obviously most of us are partial to fine time pieces, but I don't think that will keep any of us from getting the technology that would be available. We would just rather have that stuff in our phones and not strap some crappy plastic thing on our wrist.

I think the same folks here would be saying the same things if Apple introduced a smart watch.

I've already gone through the stage of wearing calculator database watches on my wrist and in those days, it was a real convenience. After grad school, I migrated back to mostly analog watches and carrying a digital diary and I didn't need all that information on my wrist and I still don't since the cellphone has become so smart that it can do virtually anything a PC can do. So, I think that the hurdle for smart watches has more to do with the wrist upon which it must be worn than on what one can do, which at this juncture is somewhat questionable. It seems that currently people have returned to wearing basic watches on their wrist, whether analog, digital, quartz, or mechanical, while the rest have just given up wearing anything on the wrist, because the cellphone is not that inaccessible in the pocket. Those of us who wear watches and carry cell phones, like to say that having the time readily accessible on the wrist is almost a no-brainer, because you can unobtrusively glance at it in almost any situation, except a televised presidential debate, without consequence. If you're in a business meeting and you start futzing around with the device on your wrist, you might as well pull out the damn cellphone and start tapping away. I think that there may be a demographic that will take to the smart watch eventually, but the smart watch will have to be one hell of a device to make inroads into any demographic at this time.

And the phone does two major things better than the iwatch. With the iwatch you can't operate a keyboard with two hands or thumbs while it is on your wrist, so texting and email is not nearly as easy. And you also can't easily hold it to your face to talk and listen at the same time to a conversation.
