Close encounter with a WG YMII in the wild.

I was sitting inside a Starbucks having a cup of coffee with my lovely wife this morning and was sporting a SS DJII with the shirt sleeves rolled up. Then, in come a middle aged gentleman and he sat at a table adjacent (about two arms length) to ours and across from me. The next few minutes was very uneventful ..... until the guy next to us took off his coat to reveal a huge hunk of metal on this left wrist. Whoa! I can't help but noticed instantly that it was a WG YMII with that unmistakeable platinum bezel. I was thinking to myself wow, what are the odds of seeing this magnificent watch in the wild? It has a wrist presence unlike any other watch I've seen.

Then a few minutes passed as I carried on my conversation with my wife, my eyes kept on drifting over to his wrist in awe. He noticed my stare and I also sensed he was looking at my DJII in return. In no time I leaned over and asked him: "Excuse me, is that WG YMII?" To which replied "Yes, I just got it recently and nice DJII!". In an instant, I moved over to his table and we talked for about a couple of minutes. I asked why he bought the WG instead of yellow and he said he preferred a more understated YMII that can fly under the radar. At this point I could see my wife rolling her eyes and gave me the look. . Then he removed the watch and handed it over to me. Whoa, I thought!! It felt like an anchor and I've never handled a watch as heavy. Incredible heft and presence is all I have to say. All in all, it was quite a pleasant exchange with another WIS.

However, my wife wasn't too impressed to put it mildly....

That is the YMII I would want after having the Platty YM for a while.
I like the bezel much better than the ceramic bezel.

I seen one about a month ago in Sam's Warehouse on the guy in front of me in line. Very nice, not sure about the understated part. When we went to the parking lot he walked right up to a Bentley and drove off.....

Sigh

Great story. You don't see many watches of that caliber in the wild, for sure.

No doubt it was a rare sighting, Christopher. Amazing watch and the guy was super cool too.

I saw a YG YMII this past summer in Aroma at Yonge/Eglinton. Certainly a statement piece!

It's a very heavy piece and I couldn't believe it's heft. The SS YMII has a blue ceramic bezel just like the YG.

Travis, it's out of my league at the moment.....thanks for asking.

Yes exactly I don't think the WG YMII flies under any radar. It's a very imposing piece. But I think he was comparing it to it's YG brother.

Classic story. I've never been able to work up the nerve to approach a fellow WIS.

I really wanted to like the WG version but the blasted bezel on my 16622 got marked up so much I knew I couldn't own another blasted bezel like the 116689. The SS 116680 is a great compromise... the looks of the WG with a ceramic bezel. IMO the two models should have been flipped - WG should have had the blue bezel. Ultimately, I much prefer my YG YM2.

Mike, I wanted to get your take (along with Ken's and Tom's among other YG MMII owners) about the WG version. I agree completely with you the SS and WG's bezel should be switched. And ultimately I agree I would prefer the YG as well.
