Been there done that and got the T-shirt but have to agree and one of the less important things in life is watches of any description, getting back on the original posters feet that's the most important and not a Rolex watch.

I've had to start over many times from scratch. In fact, it took me years to actually get started.

Fortunately, I've never had to sell a Rolex, because I started so late.

If you can do everything you need to do and still save enough money to buy a gold Rolex in a year, then get yourself a nice Seiko 5 and start saving.

Only you can evaluate your circumstances and your finances.

I agree. The SS Rolex sports watch is practically money in the bank come trade in time. Even if you lose a little you're still wearing a nice watch, if that's important to you.
FWIW, if starting over from scratch and still able to take care of your needs plus save for a gold Rolex in one year? I'm impressed.
Good luck to you.

If you want to go with a pacifier watch while saving for the grail, go with a used Sub or GMT, etc. Buy it right & you can quickly flip it for what you paid for it, maybe more when you're ready to purchase your dream machine.

When my ex cleaned me out I ate lots of Ramen noodles for months! that was back in late 87. Fast forward to 2006 and I retired at 49 so one can recoup and make it.

I would purchase a stainless Sub. In my option, if someone wears a solid gold Rolex they should be very financially secure. I have weathered many storms with a Stainless Rolex on my wrist and if the sky's stay clear long enough maybe it will turn to an 18k version. Good luck, always move forward and remember that any Rolex is more than most people have.

Preowned Steel sub at a fair price should be liquid when your ready to trade up to the gold.

Best of luck moving forward!

So first let me say good luck with your future financial situation. Having said that I do have a thought for you. They may not apply directly to you but I would suggest you consider them as you now contemplate another future luxury purchase.

If you experience a disruption of income that forces you to sell your possessions to cover living expenses or debt then frankly you have not established a sound financial plan. You need to save not spend. Build your nest egg not your luxury possessions. Live within your means. In this day and age I would suggest an emergency fund equal to at least 2 years of expenses prior to considering any luxury purchase. And then it should only be purchased outright (no debt).

It sounds like a nice watch is the least of you problems. Do you have a 401K, IRA or 6-12 months living expenses saved in the bank. If not use your phone to tell the time and focus on the long-term.....IMHO

I have a fairly modest income and have thought about this before. That is, how would I feel if things turned bad and I had to sell my watches? I'm guessing there are quite a few folks here that may have had to liquidate a favorite watch for more important things - shelter, food, education.

Yep, it would not be fun to start over. Buy you do what you have to do and life goes on.

I am sorry to hear of so many of you/(us) who have lost everything and had to start over. But you did make it through to the other side and you are alive and well and have your health. I like my toys just like the next person but again they are just that...toys. And I will never take on debt to have the "Toys" now!!!

I was raised to do without until you can pay with cash and always buy quality over quantity. It used to be said to have 6 months of living expenses set aside for an emergency but nowadays I would say a minimum of a year and better to have two years set aside for "that emergency." Do your best not to accrue personal debt and look at the positive perspective, at least you had the watches and cars and other items to sell...to make ends meet.....

There is nothing wrong in settling now for a watch of lesser means while you save for your goals. Might I suggest a Casio G-Shock or a Timex Ironman. They are both great watches and if you catch the multiple sales at stores like Kohl's you can get a watch for a decent price. Two years ago I went to Kohl's to look for a new G-Shock to use while bicycling(exercising)out on the Trails. I picked up a nice G-Shock that had an Analogue display for Time and Digital Functions as well. It stored energy from Sunlight or through Artificial Light Sources and reset the time each day to the Atomic Clock in Colorado. The Retail Price was $135.00USD and after the sale price and extra added percentages off I walked out of the store paying $80.00USD.....

May I suggest to set up a "Game Plan" and prioritize for saving to meet your goals and for your "Emergency Fund" and saving for Retirement. Then make adjustments as needed. You may find that by the time you have the "Funds Saved" you will have changed your mind as to what you want...

I would imagine the second time around once you can purchase the items you lost(had to sell) they will have more meaning and you will gain more satisfaction. Happiness, Peace and Serenity mean a lot more than inanimate objects!!!

Take care and good luck.....Leo

I have and sorry to hear about your misfortunes. Pickup the highest quality SS diver you can get your hands on for the money you have. Purchase here from a trusted seller. Get one with box and papers. Make sure it is something you really want and only buy it if you would like it in a collection. This way if things get better quicker than you think you already have a nice piece for rotation. And if things later aren't progressing as fast as you like and you can make the deal with your piece and some boot then you will have that option as well. And if things go to the crapper again (hope not) then you can always sell and come out even. Either way at least you have a quality piece to enjoy in the meantime. And skip the TT piece. Go SS until you can get the all gold model you like.

Just my bit of advice. Good luck to you and well wishes.

AA

My father never made more than $35,000 a year yet not only did he cover my mother's Alzheimer's Unit costs, he left about $250,000 behind when he died. He had to be a student of Charles A Jaffe who said, “It's not your salary that makes you rich, it's your spending habits.”

That really came to light when my wife went jobless from Jan/12 through Feb/13. Being debt-free means we simply didn't save a much during that period but we slept well just the same. Well, I did....she hated not having a job but it gave her a chance to finish her masters.

OP, I'm glad you've weathered the storm! Full steam ahead now....cover your bases prior to obtaining "stuff" first!

I was forced to sell my favorite car (1994 land rover defender #1466) and when I was back on my feet, it came up for sale and I bought it back.

If you have one good watch, you are doing well in my book. Everything else is a way to store value and enjoy while you can.

Thank you for the kind words.

I purchased an Orient Ray dive watch to wear this year. It's not a Rolex, but it is a dive watch. The bezel reminds me a little bit of a sub so I can look down and think about the future.

Selling a Defender is worse than selling a watch. I miss my Series III and my old IIA but.....I don't miss working on them all the time! Glad you were able to get yours back.

To the OP - wishing you a safe and successful 2014! I hope your climb back is short and sweet!

One thing I forgot that Im running short on is your health....I would trade all my watches, car, house and bank accounts if I was not in constant pain and just walk again without having to eat dope like candy. The old saying is true "as long as you have your health you have everything" Yes I have money and Im retired but I would trade in all in a second just to have my health back...be happy you can work and start over.
