I think I finally got it right
I have been doing the watch flipping thing for over a decade now. I have had pretty much all the the pieces that interested me in the sub $10k street value at one time or the other. I even had a pretty good little 5 watch rotation three years ago that had me pretty content. However, due to the downturn in my business and a new home build I opted to sell everything off except for an IWC Aquatimer 3548 that my wife gave me as a gift over 8 years ago.
Recently things have started looking up and I decided to splurge a bit. I was pretty sure I wanted to add a Rolex to the watch box first, but I got a bit side tracked. I picked up a Panerai 372 through a buddy for a good deal. I loved the look of that watch, but when I was really being honest with myself i had to admit the size was a bit large for my 7" wrist. I put the 372 up for trade and ended up getting an offer from regular on this forum (Thanh Do) to swap the Pam for a GMT2c which I gladly accepted. This was not the first time I have had the GMT2c. It was actually the third one that had passed across my wrist. I love the GMT complication because it makes me think of travel even though I rarely get out of the central time zone. However, the GMT2c just didn't sing to me this time. Don't get me wrong it is a beautiful watch, but it is a little dressy for my current personal style that typically consists of jeans, a polo and Red Wing work boots. I reached out to Thanh to see if he might be willing to trade for a 42mm Explorer 2 Polar. Luckily, he was more than willing and today I received a NIB Explorer 2. I have to admit that I was lukewarm on the Explorer 2 the first few times I saw it. I typically play it safe with watches which means black dials with neutral details. The white dial with an orange GMT hand is a little out of my comfort zone. However, I was in Vegas last November and I saw the Polar a few different times and I was surprisingly drawn to it. Today, with the Polar on my wrist I have to say I am very happy with my decision. The 42mm case fits my 7" wrist well. Also, the white dial with black hands has to be the easiest analog watch to read that I have ever owned. Finally, the white dial gives a me some diversity with my black dial IWC and blue dial Seiko Sumo. I'm sure I will add another Rolex along the way if funds allow. Until that time I hope the Explorer 2 will keep a smile on my face. I hope so because my wife isn't happy to see me flipping watches at such a regular pace once again. Sorry for the long post. great post! i was dead set on getting a new Submariner and went into the AD this evening to take one final look before making the purchase. I randomly tried on an Explorer just like the one you have except with a black dial and fell in love with its understated but elegant look. now i am back to making a decision between these two. funny thing is my original intention was to buy a datejust with a white dial, roman numerals and fluted bezel. I didnt spend this much time or thought picking out my wifes diamaond.
