Shy Rolex wearer
Does anyone ever feel embarrassed about the fact that the wear a Rolex?
I proudly wear a Rolex almost every single time, but sometimes in my job as a lawyer I would rather prefer a 'quarts' watch The luxurious feeling that you get when wearing a Rolex is not always a positive thing if you ask me. For some clients I'd rather hide the watch than proudly show it. Does anyone recognize this? I would like to hear your stories! Last edited by Joranb; 28 January 2014 at 05:03 AM.. Reason: grammar |

No.
I wear what I want to wear and rarely if ever does anyone notice.

If banged up and well worn, I wouldn't be self conscious about wearing one.

If you have worked hard for it, your clients should know this.
Wear it with pride, as I do, knowing what has gone into it! |

I absolutely agree.
Don't get me wrong, I'm proud of what I've acheived in order to buy a Rolex for myself. It was a far fetched dream as a kid, which came true when I was about 30 years old at the time of having my first child. With that being said, I wear mine for "me", not anyone else. I've had it for 3 years and while others have noticed, commented, and asked about it, I've never brought it to anyones attention (besides my wife). Regardless of what people on this message board want to believe, it rubs A LOT of people the wrong way. Does that mean they are right? Of course not but it's good to be aware that negative things could come out of it. So depending on which family / friends I am with, yes, I do feel uncomfortable. |

I cannot relate to your sentiment... if I am in need of a lawyer, I will not hire one who has a problem wearing a Rolex...I could just imagine how he will conduct himself in pursuit of protecting my rights and representing my interests...

Well, lets put it this way.. my big boss dont want some of our customers to know he has a 45M jet (plus furbishing).
I guess he made a few correct decisions in his life. One thing he excels at is making people feel comfortable around him. He's know when to flaunt and when to be humble. |

Sometimes. Occasionally, I work at an underserved/homeless clinics. These people pay attention to EVERYTHING. You can see them looking at your watch, tie, shirt; not in a bad way or anything, but they tend notice things.
Now, I just try to be sensitive about it by covering my watch under a shirt sleeve. |

To give you an idea of the situation, sometimes I have to deal with people who lost everything. It doesn't matter why or how but they simply lost it.
When I am wearing my Rolex it sometimes make you look like a egoist. There are many other cases in which I didn't feel completely happy with my expensive watch. |

I assume you work hard for your money and your clients. I would rather hire the successful hard worker than the pretender.

I don't think I've ever felt the need to hide unless it was for safety reasons. I don't have a problem with someone else unless it's a tacky watch but not due to expense. I figure I saved for a long time to buy what I wanted and shouldn't have to apologize. Many others could too if they desired. It's about choices.

Alternatives: an old Omega Speedmaster "Moon Watch" or the Patek Nautilus.

When I'm around friends or relatives that I know are struggling financially I don't like to be seen wearing it. Otherwise I never have an issue

some will say - who cares what other's think but when you're maybe working for 2/ 3 firms a year you soon sharpen your senses for what to wear & when. Thats not just for watches. I did a 14 month contract for one of the UK's biggest banks - short back & sides every 6 weeks, clean shaven, shirt & tie, suit. Moved into the public sector & had about 2 hair cuts in 9 months, beard, open necked short sleeved shirt. There's a reason why presidents don't wear their good watches while in office ...... !! |

Yes, that's what I mean! I now that for some my watch costs more than an income. An that could be very confronting for them. It's not something that I want to represent.

I used to care very much. And being in sales, owning my own business, I was always wary that my customers would think I'm doing too "well".
I'm slowly letting go of that. I would not feel comfortable wearing a YG watch to a meeting with code officials or customers, but any other rolex I'm getting to ok with it. I figure if I show a bit of maturity in my decisions, meaning my purchases, that will redirect properly with others. Being able to afford an expensive watch can show a certain level of success and provide customers with a comfort level. Then again, those in the know, know that many people simply buy them on credit. It's not the status symbol it once was. On the flip side, I'm 40. I bust my ass. I'm getting to a point where I do what I want. How I want. Not always. I still have to answer to my customers. But mostly.

I'm shopping for a Rolex right now. I would like to have a two tone Rolex, but will buy a stainless due to my customers' perception.

For 47 years my daily driver was either a Rolls-Royce or Bently.
Watch, a Rolex Gold Day/Date. Worked in some very 'seedy' areas of New York City. No problems about the car or watch. Local "car watchers" ( for a $5.00 bill woudl guarantee a full days trouble free parking and a clean windscreen at the end of the day). Parking lots or garages would run from $15.00 to $25.00, and your car had been thoughly searched for valuables--[often times offered for sale back to you as "found" ]. |

It's easy, there are many under the radar rolex models, mainly the explorers. Also, if you are shy of something, then don't do it. As simple as that.

I find it impossible to relate to the many posts here
by Rolex owners who are embarrassed, shy, or otherwise worried about what others think. This subject is a recurring one on TRF, yet one of the reasons we gather here is to share our collections and our enthusiasm for the brand. Let me ask this: are you similarly worried about what folks think of what you wear, what you drive, where you live? If the answer is yes, you may have "issues" that go beyond the watch you wear. |

This is the precise reason that an older matte dial sub is the perfect rolex. Because its understated.. not flashy at all. I'm still a student and wear a sub at school and no one knows what it is unless they look at the name on the dial. People are clueless about watches but their eyes attract to anything shiny like fish to a lure. Brushed SS with matte dial... the way to go! :)
