Subc for first Rolex?

I have been wanting my first Rolex for some time now. I am 34 years old, work long hours, put up with all kinds at work, and have come to a point where I want to reward myself. I have spent countless hours looking up threads on this forums and now I'm hooked! I thought for sure I did not want the Subc for the simple fact that everyone seemed to have "that watch." I wanted to stand out in the crowd. I originally thought I wanted a Platinum Yachtmaster, but now find it too mundane. I like the look of the GMTii Batman, but now find it "too blingy" and don't think the PCL's will be the best to wear as an everyday watch. I like the Hulk and and the 50th anniversay sub model but find it too much green for me, but now have come back around to the classic black model Subc.

I never really considered it a first choice but now cannot stop thinking about getting one. I love the classic good looks, the watch you can wear with a tuxedo or a pair of board shorts, it goes with anything.

My only problem is now I want one of each! My wife always says "are you reading about watches again on the forum?!" Guilty. Guilty as charged.

From a newbie perspective, anything I might be missing before "diving in?"

Get a SubC in any configuration (SS, Gold, TT, Green, Black) and don't look back. You'll love it.

Either the SubC or SD would be my 1st choice.

Happy Hunting!

I got a black sub for my first one for the same reasons you mentioned. Tux or board shorts it is a show stopper!

I was out with one of my sales reps yesterday who had a GMT master II Pepsi on. I think that might be my second...

Great choice. My first was a 16610 that I bought new in 2003 for a mere $3950! Still have it! Good luck.

Crazy thing is I purchased a TT Sub around the same time and paid something like $4600, now the stainless models are going for double of what I paid for the TT!! Wish I didnt sell it........

I don't know about or care about standing out but the SubC seems the watch for you.
Get it and you'll have no regrets, the black one of course.

Awesome first choice for a Rolex. From the sound of it, you certainly deserve it. When I'm having a tough day at work, I look at my sub, smile, and get back at it. You can always add something with a little more bling down the road. Let us know what you decide...with pics of course.

Great first watch... But don't let it fool you in thinking it's your last rolex. I would try buying from trusted seller here to save a lot of money.

Any variation of the Submariner will be a great first Rolex.

I believe I can get 15% off from my local AD from the $8550 retail price. Is that a good enough deal to buy brand new?

Sub C was my first Rolex last year. I think it is a real classic having lots of Rolex DNA.

GMT BLNR was second and it is a bit more lively than the Sub.

Absolutely. I did it for my first Rolex last weekend. Can't stop looking at it. Very fun to wear.

I bought a new 16613 TT Bluesy for a mere 5200.00 back in Feb. 1997 and still have it. It is on the way back from a service done by Rik in Florida. The UPS man will be at my door Monday mornin'!

A little over a year ago I was faced with the exact same situation. I chose the Sub C Date and I can't tell you enough how happy I am. I honestly thought by now the excitement would have worn off or at least worn down a little but it hasn't. I've become very involved here with TRF. I've seen many different models and variations of models and I can tell you that if I could do it over again I wouldn't change a thing. People ask me what my grail watch is and believe it or not my Sub is that watch. My brother gave me an Explorer I as a gift and I hate to say this but I really don't wear it that often. I will never sell my Sub. There may be other additions but there will never be a watch that I feel this way about. NEVER. Good luck to you and please let us know what you decide.

Have you checked on a BNIB price from a TRF trusted seller first?

I thought the same thing. I wanted a black Sub C but everyone had one. I saw them everywhere. So I bought the 116610LV to be different. Then I decided that the black Sub C it was so classic in black. So I bought both. I can be different and have a classic. I recommend getting going that way.

I had the same dilemma for the past week. This afternoon I picked up my first Rolex, a GMT Master II Stainless steel! I think I got a good deal; 12% off, no tax, free saturday next day delivery. Can't wait to get mine!

Look, I am guilty. A Submariner Date was my first Rolex. I got it right before the ceramic models started being released. At the time I didn't know much about Rolex as a brand and certainly the Submariner is a great starter piece. If your heart is set on it, I'd say go no date for a cleaner look.

All of that said, I think in time you might wish you longed for something else as your initial piece. Do you really need a Submariner? Do you dive or spend that much time in the water? If the answer is even remotely yes then sure go for it, but I am willing to bet almost any of Rolex offerings are going to meet your needs. Why not consider a Datejust or Explorer? Hell I think you were on the money considering a GMT Master II. A GMT complication has more utility for the average person than a depth rated, dive bezeled piece. If I could go back I'd start with either an Explorer or GMT Master II. If your heart is just set on the Submariner then ignore my advice, just trying to give a different perspective. There's still a reason all of us "collectors" (and I throw myself in there despite my humble collection) all have a Submariner somewhere in there.

The fact that many guys pick the SS Sub-C shouldn't sway you away from getting one of the best (sports) watches ever made. Get it, enjoy it, and start thinking of your 2nd and 3rd Rolex

The Sub C is the best first Rolex and I think it will be the perfect watch for you. Don't buy one of the other sports Rolexes just to be different. The sub c embodies everything great about Rolex and it will be a watch you will treasure forever.
