why the "mercedes" symbol

I'm a little new to TRF and just bought my first Rolex (new GMT-master II SS). I was wondering why the hour hand of many watches have the mercedes symbol on them. Is there any historical significance to this?

Thanks

This has been discussed in the past and I think the consensus was that it was just a good design to hold the lume material.

Spot on. It's simply a strong platform for luminous material.

ok, it makes sense, but why isn't the symbol on the minute hand? I just think its interesting that so many different watch companies use the same design for all these years. Thanks again for all the responses!

If both hands are the same its harder to distinguish them from each other ?? The hands on my Daytona are the same style and are harder to read than on my GMT.
If you ask why they are not the same size I'll know your pulling our chain

But a particular technical achievement, never the less to have the
logo always facing correctly, as that hand revolves about the hours.

I think the difference in hands makes it a lot more easier to read at a quick glance.

Well, some say Hans Wilsdorf had a little crush on Mercedes Gleitze, and that the hour hand design was his way of saying "I looove you".

Great observation.... i had not thought about that.........Its also important that you can see the hr hand even when the min hand is directly above it.

This doesn't have anything to do with the cyclops crystal and the three point star, does it?

Thanks Jocke for yet another fabulous (and hillarious) photo.

Below is my attempt at comparing Rolex and Mercedes 3-pointed stars.

Just to read

If all four hands are different you can easily read the time in the dark.

The mercedes design is to hold the lumi down.

Im nottotally convinced the purpose of the star design is to hold the lume down.....the hour markers have no such design.

The star is there to stop the lume from cracking. Larger areas of lume material can be prone to splitting.

.

I actually believe that it corresponds to Mercedes, not the car but Mercedes Gleitze as she was HW's mistress.
