What I do find "super gauche" are the "Are your Rolex and your car/pot of gold/yacht/insert status symbol here a match?" threads. Those ones kind of feel like "my bank account/credit line is bigger than yours" threads to me. But I digress... Educator. 14060m. 16570 black dial. |

It really makes me cringe when people post a photo of their watch with the steering wheel logo behind it. Why do it? What purpose does it serve other than willy waving?

I think most of them do it to show off. There has been a good bit of that the last few months on TRF.

[QUOTE=Touring;4769541]I know exactly what you mean, but I don't think this thread is all that bad. It's kind of interesting to see what people in various professions/stages in life choose to wear. For instance, I'm always flabbergasted at the students who are rockin' a Rolex or any luxury watch! Whatever happened to 'the starving student'?!
What I do find "super gauche" are the "Are your Rolex and your car/pot of gold/yacht/insert status symbol here a match?" threads. Those ones kind of feel like "my bank account/credit line is bigger than yours" threads to me. But I digress... Educator. 14060m. 16570 black dial.[/Q You have to let your hair down now and then. Many of these folks worked hard for what they have. If I had majored in math and science in college I would be flashing my accessory bling as well. It is cool to see their stuff if they are willing to share it. |

I am so glad that I have never been jealous....
I don't mind if people want to share the things they worked for on here. And for me personally, I can't get enough of the beautiful watches and supperb photography. I just love seeing good wristwatches in general ! Don't be so hard on here, it's just an hobby we all share |

I don't think that's it. Most of us spend a lot of time behind the wheel, eating meals, etc. I think those make nice backdrops for wristies. Heck of a lot nicer looking than while in the loo, at the market, etc.

Remember, Rolex watches are "tool watches" and NOT status symbols......

I have no issue with people showing off the fruits of their labour. In fact, I think it's one of the great things about this board and is probably why most of us are members. The "Incoming" threads are all about sharing a hard earned acquisition and the numerous ensuing congratulatory posts speak to the fact that: a) we appreciate the effort it required to acquire that piece, and b) we are WISes and live vicariously through others' purchases. :D I'd never heard of PVW bourbon before, but after hearing people wax poetic about it here, I'm keeping my eyes peeled and more than willing to spend the reportedly $600 it'll cost to get my hands on a bottle. Had a great meal at a 3-star Michelin restaurant and want to share? Fantastic! I've been to several and would love to hear others' experiences so that I might add them to my list of places to visit. Bought yourself an Alpina B7? Photos, please! Love that line, particularly in the gun metal grey finish. However, I fail to understand the link between the choice of one's Rolex (or any watch for that matter) to these experiences/objects and how they are a "match". That's all. |
