How many GMT masters are ....

Out of interest how many GMT masters 24hr hands are actually set to GMT ???

Or are they mainly set to local time ?

My watch is set to GMT .

Actually, it is impossible to set the GMT hand to GMT time on a GMT master and have your regular hour hand set to local time unless you live in Greenwich, England or in close proximity. It is necessary to have a GMT Master II. I'm just sayin..........

BTW, I keep my GMT hand set to my local time on my GMT Master II BLNR when I travel. Regular hour-hand set to local time when at home, and travel destination while there.

If I am reading your answer correctly, you are absolutely incorrect. Yes, on the older references 6542, 1675, and 16750 you could not independently set the 24 hour hand, but that is what the 24 hour bezel is for. On mine I keep the normal hour hand set to my home time and the 24 hour hand to GMT/Zulu/UTC or whatever local time zone I am in . This is accomplished by setting the hour differential with the bezel at the 12 o/clock position, that's why the bezel rotates and the entire reason why rolex developed this watch. I have a reference 16750 which does not allow me to independently set the 24 hour hand. In this photo it is 0710 hrs local and 1510 hrs GMT

GMT hand on a GMT master should always be set to GMT of course. The Explorer II has a 24 hour hand that can double as a GMT when needed but should be set to local time if you are a purist!

The Greenwich meridian line passes through the town in England where I live,
so instead I have my 24 hour hand set to New York time at the moment.
However I am an astronomer, so I'm thinking of setting the hand and date wheel
to Greenwich Mean Astronomical time. I like it when a new day starts at
midday.

I never even considered that you could set the bezel to something other than having the 24h triangle at 12 O'clock. Good point.....Ooops....

My GMT's hands point to GMT or UTC /Zulu time; all my GMTs are GMT Master IIs (or IICs); if I had a GMT Master I would have to use the rotating bezel for the offset in time.

I don't use the GMT function so much for travel as i do gor GMT time as pilot weather briefings and other things I do or keep track of are oriented to UTC.

Mine set to GMT and I have a list of my international suppliers with GMT timezone. So whenever I need to call them I just turn the bezel for their time.

A lot of owners here use UTC as the reference for the 24 hour hand. It depends pretty much on need and how the owner is using the watch. For my purposes home time is more useful to me. When I travel the main 2nd zone I keep track of is home time so I don't have to do anything. I just jump the hour hand to local time when I arrive somewhere and I'm done; home time is already set.

Also, I'm already much more familiar with the offsets of other times zones in relation to my home time than I am in relation to UTC. For example, I know off the top of my head that Hawaii is 2 hours behind me right now and New York is 3 hours ahead, so I know how many clicks to turn the bezel to track other zones. But I couldn't tell you what their offsets are to UTC offhand. So having the 24 hour hand set to home time makes sense for me.

Lastly, having both hour hands synched when at home keeps my watch in compass-ready mode for the occasional navigational need.

GMT hand set to GMT, bezel rotated to show CET when at home or to show home time when on the road. Watch hands set to local time where I'm at the moment. Works great anywhere but those odd time zones like India where I usually set the time 30 minutes ahead so I'm not late to meetings ;-).

Although the name of the watch is GMT, the user can set whatever timezones they need. Nowhere in the manual does it say it must be set to UTC.

What suits me best based on my business is knowing UTC time.
On my 16713, the 24 hrs hand takes care of that. On my 16750, I rotate the bezel and again, the 24 hrs hand does the work.

I work in aviation. I always used to set that hand to GMT/UTC. There are lots of clocks around me with that time displayed, I just thought it was fun to have the GMT hand set to it as well.

Last year at this time I had 2 GMT watches. I don't have any.......for the moment.

On a long layover several time zones away, I'll rotate the bezel to have it show home time. Helps knowing when to call the wife. When I go back to the airport, the bezel goes back to the top and gmt is once again referenced.

I have it set to my local time so I can easily see what time it is at home when I travel, 12hr hands are always set to the local time where I am. If I really want to keep track of GMT, I would rotate the bezel and track it as a 3rd time zone.

I'm set to GMT. I had it originally set to Manila time so I could keep the bezel in the "default" position but it's kinda interesting twisting the bezel to reflect the 2nd timezone.
