My AD

I went in to my AD Tara fine Jewelers this past Saturday. While in there talking with a friend a guy is looking at the Rolex counter as was I. The owner Eddie comes over to help the guy and he wants to buy the new Sub Hulk. He gets his drivers license and credit card and I hear him say ok everything looks good. After a few minutes I look around and the guy is gone I thought it kind of strange that he would just purchase and leave because they spent so much time with me going over everything books the watch etc. so I ask and the owner said I didn't sell him the watch because he was just going to go and sell it for more money and he wanted someone to buy the watch that would enjoy it and not flip it. I thought that was pretty good of him he could have made full retail and turned the guy away. Has anybody else seen an AD do this before? It's not always about making money it's about gaining a lifetime customer.

How could someone sell Rolex for more than it costs at AD? Fishy.

Doesn't seem relevant what someone does after purchasing from an AD. Also, if a watch is purchased by your average person from an AD they won't be able to just flip it and make a profit. Probably a loss if anything.

Sounds like Eddie is a a lousy businessman. A sale is a sale. I guess he isn't too concerned about making money.

But the whole story doesn't sound right? Why would he think that somebody would sell the watch for more than MRSP?

So, the store refused to make a sale for...philosophical reasons?

If there was nothing illegal about the purchase or anything the customer was doing wrong, I'm not sure I'd say the AD was in the "right". What do they care what someone does with a watch after they buy it?

I've seen people turned away for being belligerent/etc., or if they're "caught" trying to pull a scam, but never just for being honest that they're a flipper.

I guess a store can technically reserve the right to refuse service to anyone, but this seems a bit much.

If I were the customer, I would complain to Rolex.

Maybe the guys credit was good but he didn't have a high enough credit line. Something doesn't sound right with that story.

This. As long as you're not using the Rolex for some illegal purpose (e.g., using a genuine to create counterfeits), I don't see how the AD could have any basis for denying the legitimate sale of a watch to a customer - no matter what that customer eventually wants to do with the watch.

What the buyer does after purchase is no one's business, least of all the AD's. Sounds like a cover story to me to impress you.

Credit card and drivers license. Either his card declined or the card may have appeared stolen / counterfeit and the store owner could not be blunt about it and just politely told the guy he was not able to make the transaction.

That story doesn't make a lick of sense. When was the last time a Hulk sold secondhand for more than MSRP? Why would the AD care what anyone does after they pay for their watch?

I seen a simular incident once, when the AD refused to sell the watch without filling out the papers. The buyer walked away.

Yea. Story sounds weird. I can understand if it is a hard to get Patek but not for the Hulk.

Sounds like Eddie wasn't telling the truth as to why the sale didn't go down.

Rather than telling a negative story to another potential customer, he spun it to sound like a positive one.

I've purchased a Rolex from Tara before, and received excellent service. I'd recommend them to anybody. I agree with others here in that there seems to be more going on than meets the eye.

I've seen it with SS Daytona's..

My local AD has a couple of guys he won't sell them too, because he knows their "flippers"..lol

I'm like that was like 5yrs ago, now the SS Daytona goes for less than retail on the open market...

He swears they sell for $15k and he's holding the line..

So, yes, that mentality is still out there

I'm not sure exactly what you were saying. Without punctuation that seemed like a big run-on sentence to me.

This seems like advertisement shill post...

That's what I was told. What may have happened that I didn't see I don't know. I know when I bought my Sub there they took great care if me and did whatever they could to help me learn about the watch.

I didn't think of that. But now that you say it, it makes sense.
