Haggling/protocol
New to the forum so just wanted a heads up that if i find a watch for sale from one of the respected traders on here is it considered rude to haggle a price that a watch is listed for sale for or is it the norm and expected ?
Or to put it another way if in the past you have bought a watch from any of the well known sellers did you pay the full asking price ? Thanks. |

Some mention the word FIRM. But other than that, no harm in asking for a deal. Trusted sellers here are very polite and will love to work with you.

Welcome, there is always little room to wiggle, the Trusted Sellers here are great, but you want to lowball. Good luck.

Negotiate in good faith. Offer what you think a fair price would be, objectively. I've had some honest offers for watches and low-ball nonsense. The former get replied to. I like to search the classified for 6 months of ads for the exact model and compare asking prices.

There's no harm in making an offer. If you get the deal you want, great! If not, move on. Just be realistic. Prices from our sellers are very good. Don't expect a huge discount.

The problems that I have run into is asking too many questions. I asked a few trusted sellers on here some questions to protect myself (I'm seriously scared of getting a fake) and believe to some that puts them off because of the nature of the transaction maybe?

No harm in asking but be prepared to pay for the watch that you want.

1. Have true intention of buying the watch.
2. know how much the market is worth and how much its being sold for (know about the best deals too). 3. Expect not to get the best deal you have heard about, but set your self the limit you're willing to pay above that best offer you've heard of. haggle away... |

The fact that those "trusted" sellers are offended by our questions and stop answering after second or third PM makes me even less interested in buying anything from them. Those 500+ posts mean nothing when we're talking about $8K a pop. How can we know this whole website is not just a front for those so called trusted sellers? This is the kind of question that really popped up my mind when I was considering to buy the two watches. Good thing is, that the seller stopped responding as soon as I asked him about price and shipping costs. LOL We are not buying necessities here, so the buying experience is important. How many of our fellow members got on plane and traveled to the seller? many times, cuz they enjoy it. So I prefer to buy from someone that makes me feel comfortable and allow me to enjoy the experience. not hold my heart through the whole process ;/ so i can relate to the OP and your response even if it was the most logical answer) adds nothing to making me feel confident about the purchase. |

Negotiating is the art of using knowledge and skill to achieve a mutually agreeable position.
So keeping it positive on postings where the seller shows willingness will be expected - words like "asking $xxxxx" are a clue. But if they say "net $xxxx to me, firm" or "this is my best price"...and you ask what their best price is...then they wonder if you can read clearly. Just don't start out saying, "I see you've bumped this watch listed for a long time and you must know it is not worth what you're asking..."

I don't mind getting a deal but I'm not unrealistic and never low-ball - I believe in capitalism and every business needs to make a profit - so at times I'm okay with getting no deal or just a few % points off... People need to eat and keep things moving.

I have bought four watches from one trusted seller here that I won't name. I paid his full asking price on the first three as they were already priced very reasonably. On the fourth he offered me a discount on his asking price before I even asked.
The guy is great and starts off cheaper than any AD. So why haggle too much. |

There are always signs and protection
When you are making an on line purchase, you need to do your homework. Compare prices and photos and at any point in the transaction you can make an offer. of course unless the seller says firm, or no haggling. Usually this is a bad selling practice because everyone want to feel as though they got something better than the asking price. although its just a game. I would never pay a seller his asking price,, there are just too many other watches out there with sellers that are more fixable. AS far as protection, I would pay via pay pal or credit card only. At least to have some protection in the sale.
I would think that if you have specific budget, I would use that budget to zero in on the watch style you are looking for. lets say your actual budget is 8 grand. I would look at 8500 to 9 grand watches. I would not throw out a number right away, but develop a communications connection with the seller, let him know that you are interested, ask some question. don't be too quick to make an offer, tell him you are looking at several other watches but that his watch is a consideration. he may jump to reel you in with a drop in price for a quick turn around.. in any event you should try to get a watch that is anywhere from 500 to 1500 dollars less than the asking price and within your original budget. Remember there are plenty of watches out there.. I saw one deal go down here on this forum where the asking price was 9 grand and the sale went to 7500 and still no buyers and the guy traded the watch. I saw that deal drop five times over two weeks before he traded it. Point is he was asking 9 grand for the watch and after a few weeks was willing to sell it for 7500 but still had no takers, and he traded it. Just one experience. So haggle away but have a plan. Anything is possible. I once asked a seller if he'd include shipping to Hong Kong with the full asking price. I think he didn't read the full email as he got back to me offering 20% off and free shipping. Then again, he may just have been in a good mood/feeling generous/a great guy. I didn't ask, just sent the money.
