New member here, just joined about a month ago to find my wife the perfect rolex for her 30th.

As a result of my many hours on TRF, I am finding myself looking to upgrade my own wrist decor. So I went to the jewelry/watch store today to check out rolex and omega watches for myself. When I showed the lady my current watch, a Tag Heuer, she laughed!

Am I being overly sensitive by getting offended by her chuckle? Is a Tag a laughable watch?

Should I hide my Tag in shame (until I get that Speedmaster I have my eyes on)?

I perfect response would have been to let her quote you a few prices, then seem interested in her offers and when she asks if she could ring you up you could start to laugh and say "as if I would pay retail" and chuckle all the way out the door...

Take your business elsewhere.

I have window shopped Rolex @ my local AD, tried on a few, had a lengthy conversation and stay there, wearing my Casio G-Shock and the sales person was pleasant to interact with.

There are decent sales person out there, just not the one OP had ...

Barriers to entry into the watch sales business can be very low.

LOL! Yeah, he was interested in one, that's why he went down there when he heard they had one. At the particular time they were not plentiful. When a dealer got one they got only one, and it would be gone in a day or two. He wasn't in a hurry though or he would have already owned one. But when the salesman talked to him like that the exterior color suddenly became a lot less important to him.

Naturally he hadn't thought about the car he had driven there to begin with. He had to call me and ask him to go back there with him so I could drive his other car home.

Nothing wrong with you owning a Tag. I own 3 Tags & wear them in rotation with my other watches. Like Dan said she was trying to get you to buy a watch. Now what I would do is buy the watch somewhere else & then go back & ask to speak to the manager & let him know how rude his salesperson was to you & that's why you purchased your rolex elsewhere.

Dan hit the nail on the head. It is a sales tactic. "I'll show them!" is the response they are hoping to elicit.

When this tactic is used on me I quickly bring them back to reality. I once had a similar experience and responded, "Are you insane? Are you familiar with the concept of customer service and how it relates to your position?"

Salesman had no response and I left abruptly.
Tags are great watches. I have owned many and they are both beautiful and well made.

I just wanted to add that my AD also sells Tag shown next to his Rolex display. Echoing the others. Consider the source!

Really unprofessional sales person for sure! I am in the Westchester NY area and may know which AD that is. That being said I own a Tag and many AD sell both...I also own a Daytona and enjoy both watches. Nothing wrong with Tag.

My girlfriend says my tag heuer carrera is better than my AP Diver Forge Carbon. The AP is so big in the bezel while the dial is small, she said not balance.

tag heuer carrera is my fav!

I don't think any watch with a coma in the price tag should be laughed at.

I was wearing an $89 G Shock when I bought my first Rolex a couple years ago. That AD has since moved $20,000 of money from my bank account to his.

Yep, I personally think it's an idiotic sales tactic. I had this happen once and couldn't help myself; I was pissed. If I recall correctly, my response was along the line of this - "Really? You think you're going to make a sale by denigrating the watch I have on? That might work on some people but honestly it just lost you a sale with me. Let me talk to your manager..."

Forget what she thinks! Tags are certainly not laughable. I have a 1999 Tag F1 chrono that I love to bits. I've taken that watch off roading in the mountains on atvs and I've taken it hiking. It is a rather tough little watch for what it is. Enjoy your Tag to the fullest!

The only brand that merits a chuckle when spied on the wrist is Invicta.

Wear your TAG with pride -- and find another AD.

Adam

Nothing wrong with Tag Heuer. After all, they were good enough for Ayrton Senna.

By denying her your business, you had the last laugh anyway.

I bought my first Rolex at 20 while probably wearing a digital throw away watch on my wrist, a t-shirt, and cut off denim shorts. Actually, the more I think about it, I might have looked like I just finished cutting my own lawn. Still, O.C. Tanner in Salt Lake City treated me like any other customer...and I bought three more watches from them over the next three years.

To the OP: You did the right thing by not buying into the sales tactic. And the brand of your watch is far from laughable. Don't feel like you need to upgrade because somebody wants to increase their commission.

This tactic used by car dealers who walk you to the car of your choice through a lot of more expensive cars, as you walk, you get "So, this is our more expensive selection that is above your budget" or something along those lines. It has been also used on me quite a few times. My response is simple "Oh, I guess you're right!" It really catches those pushy sales people :-)

BTW, Wall Street Journal had an interesting blog entry:

"Shoppers pining for a fancy handbag are more likely to pull out their credit cards than turn on their heels after encountering a rude clerk, according to new research. That’s because indicating that some people don’t fit with fancy brands motivates those individuals to prove they do — by making a purchase."

TAG is a brand you can wear that most people think is high-end, yet you can get one for a pretty good price.

So, you can impress your friends and feel comfortable wearing it amost anywhere.

TAG from what I hear is developing in-house movements now, so I think people won't laugh so much anymore.

I thinks it's not right however happens.

Had the same thing looking at omegas and had an iwc catalogue in hand. Shop assistant said iwc made shit watches ( exact words ). Safe to say I didn't purchase from there and wrote a letter to the management who was very concerned with the treatment and offered 25% off upfront as an apology as well.

The tag is a great watch. If you like it it's great. Look at people who would dream of owning a tag- which includes on of my colleagues. He is saving up as it's his dream piece. Others only look at Patek or Lange.

If you smile when you out your watch on in the morning it's perfect. I bought my watch for me, I couldn't care if others even thought it was ugly or fake.

The easiest thing is to move on; someone that shallow and condescending may cross your radar, but should have zero impact on you. They really are not worth it.
