I truly don't remember, I never saw them. He did some back room dealing while I was raiding the food and drink provided by the AD His explanation made sense. He said he was only getting a couple of percent on his investments and said he could do better with the watches. I had no reason to doubt him, he could buy and sell me a couple of times over!!!

For rolex no. I do have two double sealed Patek's (some member's here might know what they are). One is the same model and metal as one that I wear weekly and the other is just something I won't open because I know it will go up. There is no doubt.
But for rolex, als, ap, iwc, omega, panerai and jlc I wear everything. |

I don't even have a safe, so my queen would have no realm.

Not me either....got one of the last 16610LV's, a random serial, and the first thing I did was take the stickers off, size it, and wear it for 2 months!

I have 15 watches now, but only ONE is a "safe queen".
BNIB Omega Speedmaster Legend (Michael Schumacher). It's killing me not to wear it, but it will always be worth more BNIB. But if he comes out of his coma safely, I just might have to try it on ONCE to celebrate. (Not my Pic) |

This is my only safe queen, and it is not brand-new......although it is close to it. I have had it in the safe since 2008. It is an M-serial LV sub that was in mint condition when I bought it almost 6 years ago. I bought it for $5,450 with the black bezel insert included.
It is for my 11 year old son one day

I can't seem to hold on to anything in immaculate condition. They scream at me, "sell me, sell me..Someone wants the value I have for more than you paid." I'd much rather have a watch with some wear so that it is harder to sell...too much work to sell. I'll keep that around for a while. I learned this buying and selling acoustic guitars and it just seems natural to me now.

But, I admit that I do have 3 safe queens. In my defense, they are all meant to be worn sooner or later, but since I have 7 watches in rotation, these can stay where they are at the moment. The 3 watches are all BNIB. One is a 16600 SD, one is a 16710 Coke and one is a 16610LV. The main reason I bought the first was to pass it down to my 13yr old son for his graduation. After I discovered the comfort of these "previous" models, I decided I wanted to ensure that I would have one until the end of my days. This way I can enjoy them for as long I walk this planet I also love the look of the previous models, especially the sports models. Have you ever bought a pair of shoes that fit you so good, that you wished you would have bought 3 pairs back in the days you could buy them? Well, I prepared myself for that answer by acquiring these watches. From the 7 in rotation, 5 are of the previous line and only 2 of the newer models (DJII and GMTc) I hope this makes some sense to you guys, and if it doesn't, I am pretty sure it won't affect your lives in anyway Have a great evening!

For those that keep your watch BNIB, do you ever take your watches out to wind them?

Watches are made to be worn and I wear mine.
Maybe if I were younger and I had my current interest in watches, I might just put one away. A brand new vintage watch does seem to have some appeal. I highly doubt that I could sell such a piece and that I'd eventually wear it as I do the watches I now own. That's all speculation, though. As it is, I'm too old to be hanging on to things for the sake of holding on to them, possible appreciation or not.

Thanks, Mike. My family bought a BNIB 14060M for my nephew. I am wondering if letting the watch sit for 18 (!) years will damage the watch in any way, with oils drying out. The watch will obviously need a service, anyways, but I don't want to cause any undo damage in the meantime by just letting the watch sit for years on end.

safe queens
new sub n/d , 5513, 14060m, new milgauss, explorer 16570, explorer 216570, cellini white gold I bought in 2000. Must say I am impulse buyer as I purchased these all within the last year or so except the cellini. Sent them up to my son who doesn't care for timepieces----he uses his Apple phone---who needs a watch!!!!! Lucky he had the sense to put in his safety deposit box.Funny thing I love my Rolex's ---but I wear a movado---go figure. Hopefully one day Sonny will appreciate a artful, beautifully designed, mechanical marvel. We shall see!!!

Old watches, even BNIB, UNLESS they have unusual collector value (eg, COMEX, Pepsi with 3186), typically just stay below or, if you're lucky, around MSRP. They are NOT investments. They are expenditures with opportunity cost of what you could earn with the money invested elsewhere.

never got the safe queen thing on rolexes... almost any vintage watch can be restored to be a modern safe queen at the right price by artisan restorers. the irony is most serious collectors prefer non-restored anyway. if you want to invest in watches at better roi, buy deadstock classic swatches from the 80's. swatch collectors go bonkers for those things and they're pretty cool too. amazing to consider $35 watches saved the swiss watch industry from near collapse. buy to wear a rolex. |

I don't, but I would really like too. I just don't think I could bare it! I collect safes, and have lots of watches that are near NOS, but they all still get worn.
