GMT II 16710 dial fonts
Dear TRF GMT Master MASTERS,
I just acquired a second 16710 (left, below). I noted that the dial font differs from the one I already had (right, below). Right = K serial, 2002 (thicker font, brilliant white) Left = P serial, 2001 (finer/thinner font, off-white) Is this normal? Should there be a font difference between these two or is one of them an aftermarket dial? I also notice that the bezel insert fonts are different, is that normal/abnormal? I used the incredible the GMT Master II thread and in particular this post about dial fonts as reference but still cannot tell. Appreciate your help. |

I was the seller of the watch and after doing research myself I am really curious. There do seem to be some very subtle width differences although not typeface differences, I've owned it for around three years and was pretty sure everything was original to the watch. I have found some threads about error vs non-error dials but that seems to be a different situation. Any eagle eyed GMT lovers have any ideas for the OP and myself?

Both dials look the same. Even under magnification, the only difference seems to be the dial on the left (P serial number) seems to be faded. Also, the GMT II on the left has a bezel insert with the serifs (small hooks at the end of the numbers). You'll see serif fonts on some of the dials and bezel inserts throughout the years of production on the sports watches and possibly other models.
Regarding the bezel inserts, I can't name a specific time period the serif inserts were used, as it seems rather sporadic from my experience, I'm rather sure that the one on the left (P serial) is original and the K serial could be original or a service replacement insert. As far as the "error" dial goes, there is no such thing as an error dial on the GMTs. During the last couple years of production of the GMT II, the II in GMT-Master II font was changed. The GMT "error dial " originated with dealers trying to hype the prices for these watches - nothing more - nothing less. Here is a "P" serial number from my collection that was sold a few years ago. The bezel insert is a "serif insert."

Yes this is normal the dials where made at different times using a different printing stamp. If you look at any other model produced at a different date you can see these slight changes.

I actually wrote the "Error" dial post on my site (OC Watch Company). There is no real method to the madness as when youy think you have it figured out something else that trumps all of the data you collected throws everything out the window. Here is another great article on the GMT's. I found some great info from it @ahnets http://luxurytyme.com/en/rolex-relat...ii-16710-3186/
