The only two I grate against are gen and rep.

There's a certain type who describes watches this way.

I mean, clearly you're all Hulked out there, so it's clear where you stand, but don't you think it's a little harsh to suggest that people who think that cartoon supermen names for their $10k watches is a little childish don't have lives?

It's bugged me that I wrote that ever since I did, and in hindsight it was a hastily worded post that did not represent what I intended to say.

(and I'm not going to try and explain what I did mean to say because I've been on a Stag-Do all weekend and I'm waaaaayyyyy too hungover and I'll just dig myself into an even bigger hole!)

Suffice to say thought that I apologise unreservedly and I'm genuinely sorry if I offended you or any other forum member in any way.

No smiley, no joke, just a sincere apology which I hope you (and anyone else that was offended) will accept.

Dan.

Some men name their cars, some their private parts, some their watches. I don't really care. I learned that my latest is called Hulk and it does not bother me.

Not really a nickname, but when I compliment someone on their watch, I often say "nice clock." Usually provokes a smile.

Disagree entirely that those using nick-names are only interested in the status that the Rolex brand brings, I for one am not interested in status; if anything, owning a Rolex in the UK tends to give you a negative image rather than a positive one, so anyone buying one for status has got it a little wrong!

Names are just a bit of harmless fun, not everyone's cup of tea, but all to their own.

As for learning about the history etc, that can prove troublesome on this forum; when I have asked technical questions (I.e. the recent thread I started about Steel) you get some helpful answers (like the one you posted on that thread), but also a load of unhelpful answers telling you to use the 'search function' or providing incorrect information.

I would also say that when I first arrived on the forum I was one of those guys asking everyone else what I should buy, which I now realise is a bit silly!! But in the last couple of years I have evolved thanks to this forum, and am now able to hold an intelligent debate on watches. So don't give up on those asking silly questions, or starting silly threads, you may find that in time you will turn them into a fellow WIS!!

Finally, whilst I can't speak for the 70's, I can say that Rolex had an associated status as far back as the 80's, so anyone that thinks it is a recent thing is very much mistaken!!

As for Jakes comment about watches saying 'hi', I'm with you my friend!! But dude, chill out!

I think naming your car or watch is silly and Kingsnake agrees with me.

....seems to me judging by how many responses this thread is getting its being enjoyed. :thumbsup

A few posts saying this is a bit 'lowbrow' and 'members are not what they used to be...'

C'mon...

Wouldn't you agree the whole brand of Rolex to a large degree is built on aspiration...that takes many forms beyond just the inner workings of my Rolex , as interesting as learning about this is. Its all good fun.Like enjoying the fruit of years of hard work is by owning a luxury watch. I resent the implication I might be a Rolex owner because I'm only interested in status ownership conveys.

Anyway...I'm off to the shop now in my top of the range BMW...or should I take a spin in the wife's carrera... Nop...I'm going to take the Rubicon as its sunny outside...come to think about it...I haven't taken the Harley out for ages...have to change the YG for the Platty though or I will look silly.

There was no need for an apology Dan.

I certainly wasn't offended - I also have a life.

WE could be the first two members of the 'I have a life' hijack.

Beater.

Someone's beater can be someone else's dream watch. Just call them 'everyday' watches.
