Chaps

Always be wary of asking advice on what to buy in specialist fora.

I regard myself as a normal, well balanced human being and used to have an interest in collecting pen nibs.

If anyone asked me for advice, I would have persuaded them to buy dip pen nibs in boxes of ten thousand as a perfectly normal thing to do.

Now a few years later, I would be less enthusiastic in dishing out such advice.

I hope you take my point.

Regards

Mick

I prefer my approach of "what would you have done?" For example I have a 14060 and bought a 114060 recently. 75% supported the decision the other 25% thought I should have bought the 39mm Exp as I had set out to do. The ensuing discussion in the thread gave me some good ideas. I got what I wanted and more realizing there are alternate avenues open to me. But then again, I knew my heart from the time I made the decision.

Sorry to the Person Who thought my post was trolling. As If anything negative angrinst a submariner is some sacralige. I spend 6 months deposit ing money in an account and after a lot of financial sacrafice I am a little underwhelmed. I spent half that amount on my Pam and was thriled by it. Anyway It is true that wisdom comes from errors and I am much wiser today. Thanks to all for their advice though the AD I delt with only offer a credit note and 10% restocking charge, so either way i take a hit I could and should have avoided. Ps I do appreciate that One could have worse problems still in tough times when money is hard to save for some you dont want to make mistakes.

I had a friend who spent years saving up for an Aston Martin, he lived and breathed AM for years.

Eventually he saved up enough money, bought his dream car and was bitterly disappointed. This sort of thing happens.

That's a good rejoinder. If flipping is a likely outcome, opinions matter much more.

I was going to respond to that. I remember your original thread on the decision, and never considered this a trolling post.

I wouldn't call it a mistake necessarily. You wouldn't have known you didn't like it if you hadn't have bought it. So, while it's a tough pill, it makes sense to cut your losses and get what you want...if you're certain the Subc date isn't right for you.

Original thread? Which thread? The OP posted only 6 comments so far as I can surmise unless the OP has another account here in the forum but I thought this was his first thread. But i could be wrong, and like I've said I was just playing devil's advocate there.

It's easy to lose your mind when you read so many great stories about the submariner and seeing so many pictures of it (or even other watches). I tried out the SubC myself several times and even though I think it looks great in the pictures I've seen it didn't do nothing for me. I have to get that wow-feeling.

Which car was he dreaming about and which one did he eventually get? I can understand if you are lusting for a V12 AM for years and you end up getting a V8 vantage (which still is a great car) you'd be disappointed.

I see your point. I do remember the thread about the guy splitting time between UK and Spain, and looking for a watch to buy for the Spain travels. Can't find it now of course, but figured it was same user name.

I had a SubC and did not like it at all. I just got a C-Dweller and it is the perfect new model rolex. If you can find one give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

Your most painless solution is to return it in exchange for something you love / want. 10% is a small sacrifice in the grand scheme of things.

If you're selling, remember the likes of Iconic Watches are already selling them at £5200 brand new, so you're probably looking at £4500-£4800 to the trade, maybe £5000 privately. So i'd try and get to like it, maybe hold onto it till a price rise comes along and then try and recoup slightly more.

We'll, my 2cs. Went through the panerai phase. Gave one to my wife and traded the other for a SubC date and now, own a vintage sub, last generation sub and last generation GMT. No other brand has bit me the way Rolex has, and I also had the superocean, IWCs etc. my point is since the watch is "tainted" now without stickers etc, wear it for a couple of weeks and see if things change. If not, then follow the advice given by others and trade or sell.

To all you guys suggesting that the AD should just take the watch back as if it were new out of pity for the buyer's remorse story so
that he'll purchase there again in the future...

I'm interested in knowing whether you'd feel the same way if you were the next customer who walked in looking for a Sub and was sold the one that this fellow had already owned & taken the stickers off?

You'd want a new watch, right?

How about if you were the AD who's now stuck with a used watch to try and sell, and a customer who he already knows is potentially difficult
and might do the same again?

You're smart enough to have saved up for the damn thing. I'm sure you can sort this out. Do the math on what the hit will be at the AD and trade for the exp 2.

Buyer remose is a pain and I can appreciate that. But in your case, you are actually "lucky" that the watch is a Sub, a popular model that is easily sold and retains value well. I have experienced much worse with less popular models. That is why I have learned my lesson and never impulse buy the first time I encountered the watch no matter how appealing it is at the AD.

Hmmm.....Interesting situation.

You bought your SubDateC after much deliberation.

Make a list of the features that you like on a Rolex.

dial colour/style?
bracelet glidelock etc.
case - big block or older model?.
markers - standard/maxi/romans etc?
movement - GMT/date/no date.
etc
etc

Could be you may have chosen the one you wanted.

Sometimes we can't see the wood for the trees.

Exactly my advice. I'm sure the AD (was it Lund's?) would be happy to do a one-for-one swap since the Exp 2 is cheaper. Provided of course, they have a black dial version in stock...

File this under "first world problems". The AD should accept it at least in trade at 100% of the sale price...at least if he wants you back as a customer any time soon.

Absolutely right - First world problem. People out their with real life issues so a sense of perspective on my part is required and atained now. Will contact the AD and see what they say, I noticed that they forgot to include the two tags that comes with the watch so will defiantly want them as if I do sell people who purchase place a lot of importance on such things. Have my Breitling SuperOcean A17360 on this morning and I had forgotten what a lovely watch that is, $1795 dollars in EB Horn Boston 12 years ago and looks as good today as ever.
