Congrats erdiesel! The SD is a fantastic watch. I personally think Rolex are priced fairly compared to other watches. The new prices are not a concern in the long run. Enoy it, I have had mine for several days now and think it is the best!

I wouldn't regret not haggling. It's not possible here in London on SS sport models from ADs as they will sell them easily. We don't have state sales tax here just VAT so perhaps that's why.

Anyway - you saw the watch, loved it and paid what you were prepared to pay and that's the main thing.

I have never haggled over any of my Rolexes. It's not a gourd after all (Life of Brian joke)

actually, i never saw the sd in my life. i was originally looking to replace my omega with another one and thought I would check out the rolex site. as soon as i saw the picture of the sd on rolex's site, i knew she was the one :)

i called around to the AD's in manhattan, and no one had one in stock, in fact they didn't even have the submariner in stock. I asked them if they could order it for me, and they said they could. they told me it would take about 4 weeks for delivery, i paid up front, but they said when i receive it and if i don't like the way it looks or feels, they would refund me my money. so i said why not.

when the AD called me yesterday to tell me it arrived, i rushed over and the rest is history.............

I like that story! A condident buy. Shows you knew what your heart wanted and knew it the moment you saw it! That's great. So many times on TRF there are threads put up by buyers not certain of what to get, almost asking members to almost choose for them. I always say wait if your choice is split, and not buy for buying's sake

It was similar with my purchase of the SS GMT IIc. I had only seen it in pics and lusted after it so badly. I knew it would be my first rolex for certain. But had never seen one in an AD's window (nor was I in a financial position to buy one at that stage). At year's end, passing by the only AD in Durban, SouthAfrica, I swa one just sitting there in the window. The mere sight of it revived my drive, and I made moves with funds to get it. I had it the next week!

okay i'm a bit annoyed now, i checked my serial number and apparently i have a "z" series model and not the "m" model.

since mine was newly delivered in March, I expected the "M" series. which i didn't get. plus i paid the new prices.

should i be annoyed? should i worry that i have the z series and not the m series?

Keep in mind that Rolex still produces the Z serial, together with the M serial. Larry (Tools, the mod) once described the likely scenario where Rolex produces a bunch of Z serial cases, then M serial cases. However, Rolex does not use these cases sequentially, nor do they use up all the Z cases before using the M cases. Likely, these cases are produced then dumped in a large container, then used somewhat randomly. No one really knows how Rolex does things.

For the SD, there is no difference between the Z and M serial, anyway. You can also guesstimate the time your clasp was made by reading the clasp code. This has been discussed before in this forum. Keep in mind that clasps and cases are manufactured separately.

First of all congratulations on choosing the pinnacle of diver watches. The Sea-Dweller is the top of the range of Rolex sport diver watches. You can have peace of mind if ever you go swimming, snorkelling or scuba diving. It is one of the few ultimate waterproof watches in the world today, being pressure proofed to 4000feet (122BAR or 1,740 psi). The triploc crown is unique only to Rolex diver models as well.


The latest Rolex price list valid March 2008 (see post by Anastasios) shows the SD at US$6225 suggested retail.

The 'Z' series SD that you have bought was manufactured during the period May 2006 through August 2007. The 'M' series is the current model and started to come out in either August or September 2007 and should be updated sometime later this year.

My feeling is that your AD should not have charged you the newer price under any circumstance.

You may wish to discuss what you have learned with him and see how he reacts. If he remains unmoved, you have 2 courses of action. Write a letter to RUSA and/or seek a civil claim for $900 on the AD.

There is also the question of deception. He has sold you a Rolex watch and purported it to be the latest model (which it is not) and in doing so charged you that price. In my country that is an indictable offense. Maybe in NYC they have similar laws.

You have since discovered the model is a superceded version and are fully justified in getting a refund of the difference.

Nice choice and welcome to the Club.

I'm 100% with Steve on this one. If you paid for it, then the price went up, I think you should have got it at the original invoice/contracted price. If the AD told you it was the latest model then it should (by March '08) be an 'M'.
Just my opinion.
Some will say there is no difference between an 'M' and a 'Z' or even a 'D' but down the track if you want to sell it, the most recent s/n will sell first if all else is equal.

In any event and whatever the outcome, it is a spectacular Rolex - enjoy wearing it.

Congrats on a great watch. You picked a fine one. As for maintaining the watch, It's a TANK. Solid and reliable. Occasionally wash it with soap and a toothbrush and get it serviced 5-7 years and you'll have a watch that will last you a life time. Enjoy it for many years to come.

okay dug around the forums and found the thread on looking up clasp codes. According to my clasp code (go to http://www.oysterworld.de/1/index.htm for details on clasp codes and serial numbers) my watch was made in June 2007. i know i shouldn't care but nevertheless i'm a bit bothered by the fact that i just bought this, newly delivered from rolex, and somehow rolex kept this in inventory for almost 10 months then shipped it out to my AD...........meanwhile they have new stocks coming in that are "M" models not to mention a newer model coming out in a fewer months

In the end I don't think it will matter in a few weeks after wearing the watch. I have a new TT GMT-Master II c and wanted a SS Date Sub. I looked around and found one used on the forum here. With the new prices I saved $1,600 and got a watch that was impeccably cared for.

You have a fine watch that will last you a lifetime. Give it a few days of wear and the "Z" vs. the "M" issue should resolve itself.

You wanna ease up there, tiger? As the rest of the guys have already explained in terms both intelligent and respectful, there's no real difference between Z and M.

You post has added bugger-all to what has already been said, but you presume to tell somebody to get a life. The irony is just sickening.

Seeing as how you're new and all, I'm going to cut you some slack. Be advised, however - I only say it nicely once, and once is the house limit.
