DJII vs. Explorer II

Looking to add another Rolex to compliment my Sub-C non-date.

My choices are narrowed down to the DJII with blue dial and roman numerals (model # 116300) or the white dial Explorer II (model# 216570).

I’ve tried both watches on and like them both for different reasons.

DJII is a classy watch and might be a little dressier for work related purposes (but think it can be worn with casual attire too). The blue dial on this watch is an absolute home run too. How do any current owners feel about this model? How does the bracelet and smooth dial hold up to scratches? Does the bracelet fit as comfortably as my Sub?

Explorer II is a little sportier, but can be worn with suit/tie I think. The white dial is really sharp and like that the case diameter is a little bigger (coming from someone whose owned a Breitling Super Avenger and other large watches). The bracelet is fantastic and has the newer in-house Rolex movement. My concern with this model is how well the bezel holds up to normal usage. I’ve read that scratches could be a concern, which I don’t worry about with my ceramic bezel Sub.

I’d love to hear opinions from current owners of one or both models with pros/cons and what ultimately lead you to your final decision.

Tough choice! I've never owned an Epy II though and have had a couple of DJIIs which I loved. So DJII get my vote.

Try both on & see where your hearts at, be surprised if you don't go for the Polar Explorer tho!



That said both would complement your Sub beautifully.

I've owned both, but the DJII is the only one left in my collection. My DJII is the blue stick dial with the smooth bezel and it's a beautiful watch to look at. You really need to try them both on and see what fits you best.

Since you already have a sub, my vote is DJII.

This is very similar to a prior thread (although the Exp 2 there was the 16570).

Here is what I said there - I think the same applies:

The DJII is more dressy, the Exp 2 is more casual. Going against the CW here, I think you can pull off casual with the DJII (depending on dial option) more easily than dressy with the Exp2. Also, you have casual already firmly covered with your Sub. For these reasons, I think you'd get a broader spectrum of usability with the DJII.

Blue dial DJ2 is perfect for you, it is not very dressy at all, more a sports dress watch.

I had the same quandary and went for the DJ2 blue dial.

I have the 216570, love it, have never had any problems with bezel scratches nor do I worry about it. The bezel is not a smooth finish but rather has a sort of starburst texture (not sure of the correct term). The bezel edge is polished however. I have no doubt the bezel could be scratched but not so easily as perhaps the domed, smooth bezel that is on the all SS DJII. IMO both are great looking watches and either will make you happy. I went with the EXP because I needed a GMT for travel and I really liked the substantial feel of the watch.

Not a big DJII fan. I think that it made the bezel too in-your-face for an aesthetically pleasing dress watch...

Still, get the watch that best matches your lifestyle and that you want to put on your wrist every day..

Difficult choice here as both are great watches for different reasons. I prefer the blue of the stick dial than the Romans but that's a personal choice. The Explorer seems to look like there is more of a watch but I do like the DJ II. Its at this time I would say 'and what would Rod Stewart do at a time like this ' !

Yeah if you own a Sub then I'd say get the Datejust II. These watches are on complete opposite ends of the spectrum as far as dress or sport. I would focus more on what you want the watch for and then make your decision.

The only Rolex I know of that doesn't have an issue with excessive glare off the crystal..

It's like it has an AR coating...which of course it doesn't...but that wicked white dial sure is easy on the eyes in direct light..

if your going to be swimming and working in it using as more of a tool than dress up piece then it would obviously be the exp2.

I was thinking between the two prices, decided to meet in the middle with white dial DJII.

The black dial Explorer II dresses up great in a suit, doesn't look like my Father's watch (nothing wrong with looking like my Pop's watch), a great 21st Century watch.
