www.rolex.com

Forgive me if this has been covered before. Has anyone noticed that they don't show all the different styles and colors of timepieces they make on their website? For example, they don't have the MOP dial, or blue dial yatchmaster.

On top of that, it seems that they would want to really spend time with photographs of each watch, to wet the appettite of perspective buyers.

I for one would love to see more pictures and finer examples of their watches on the website. Maybe it's meant to leave you wanting more? At any rate, it's not going to stop me from picking up another one while in Mexico in May..

Their website has always sucked. It likely always will. It's designed for non-WIS buyers, which prolly makes up 95% of their market. I guess for them, it does the job.

But it still sucks.

What my esteemed colleague was trying to convey, is that the Rolex website does not always live up to expectations and that this will remain the status quo for an undetermined period. The website was designed for buyers with a slightly more superficial interest in their offerings then people who’s whole life revolves around high-end watches. The former group accounts for 95% of their market. For that same group, this website is adequate. But having said all that, it is still below par.

I agree, way below par. I also understand that members here make up maybe a couple percent of the people that buy Rolex. I would just like to see the watches more up closer and personal. As has always been the case, I don't understand their marketing technique. Truth be told, they don't need one.

I've noticed for a while that like half of the watches aren't even on there. You'd figure considering the profit margin they most likey make in their watches, they would spend more on putting informative stuff on their website instead of that super-expensive most likey multi-million dollar advertizing crap. I mean come on. Some people standing in the arctic with cocktail dresses on. They don't even focus on the watches in the campaign. Oh wait, this was about the website. Ummmmm it sucks. I still want one of their watches.

Rolex has (in the early years, with the odd flash of brilliance these days) had amazing marketing. The early years set the foundation on the myth of Rolex.

Personally I see them now as a company resting on their marketing laurels and just doing the bare minimum to get by. That said, their event sponsorships are outstanding. Basically they've positioned the brand as a high-end watch (to the non-WIS). I think they still market a bit of the toughness side. But their brand is one of the top 10 recognizable brands in the world (up there with Coca Cola and Mercedes Benz).

BTW, if you want to see the whole line-up in print, your AD should have a big binder of all the models, with all the bracelets, dials, marker options, ice options, etc... printed in full colour. I'd love to get a copy of one.

All three of the dealers I've been to have the binder you speak of. Unfortunaley for all Rolex customers, it is merely a drawing of the watch and not a photo. Don't get me wrong, I love to drool over that binder..

If your looking for images of Rolex try swissluxury.com or alanfurman.com. I'm not suggesting buying from either one of them but their pretty good as research tools for images and pricing.

Bingo! We have a winner!

Why would they bother doing anything but the bare minimum?

Rolex does have a great variety of dials on their models, especially the DJ and DD range. It's really not possible to include each and every dial on their website just as it is not possible to include them in the Rolex catalogue.

95% of the guys out there would look at the website and still drool at whatever they are viewing there....and Rolex will have accomplished their purpose by whatever they've got displayed there.

Once a person is hooked, he will visit his AD and then make his own final choice.

Exactly!
It seems as though no matter what they do, or don't do, for that matter people will still go to great lengths to acquire one, me included. This is really an annoying addiction

JJ, that's a great point. But, the reason I bring this up is because my AD's are fairly small. There are a number of watches that I will never see in my AD. Stainless Daytona, TT blue dial yatchmaster, yg GMT, LV sub........

For me, the net, and catalogs are the only place I can see items like that.

The size of an AD has nothing to do with the fact you will never see a SS Daytona or an LV at an AD.

Hmm, not sure I agree with that. The smaller the dealer, the fewer watches they get in. The larger dealers are apt to sell more product, which means they get their case restocked more often, and get more of what they ask for.

There are others, besides those two, that my AD's probably won't ever see in the case either.

I have been to some of the largest ADs in my country and I have yet to see a SS D in any of them. I have only seen one LV (but I passed on it).

Obviously the stainless daytona is going to be hard to come by in any location. But my point was there are less common watches to see in the display case, and chances are better that you will spot them in a larger display/dealer.

I saw one in the AD inside Casino Niagara in 2001. White dial. Wasn't sold either.
