Yes most were gold but are you sure its 18Ct as many were 15Ct and not many around today.

This system was indeed waterproof when it left the factory making it rolexes first waterproof watch but failed after a few years. As you stated it was generally sold to the Asian markets to solve the problem of steel dials rusting quickly in such high humidity environments. I believe the engine turned dial I have is rarer than the porcelain dial as most rusted in these environments once the waterproofing inevitably failed from worn threads. Interesting piece of history IMHO.
