Another Lange vs. Patek matchup

What's the consensus and why?
On one hand we have the Patek 5204p split second chronograph perpetual and on the other, the newly released Lange 1815 Rattrapante Perpertual calendar.
Which one tickles your fancy the most?

Wow, I'd hate to have to choose between one or the other but if push came to shove I'd go with the 5204. I feel that it's a tad sportier and I prefer the cleaner dial. The ALS is stunning also though so there isn't a wrong answer here.

Aesthetically speaking I find the Lange nicer. I own neither one..
I feel it's nice to see clangs get some votes over Patek this one time.

I prefer the dial layout of the Patek.

Patek for dial layout and use of apertures for day/month over subdials on lange. That said, very few watches I would prefer over the 5204 in general.

Imho the ALS actually looks a bit cluttered by comparison.

I agree with a couple of others that although I love Pateks, the aesthetics of that particular Lange are more balanced and cleaner than that particular Patek, IMO.

I'm not tremendously fond of either one personally, so I would choose the cheaper of the two. Yes, these are awesome complications, but I think there are much more appealing pieces aesthetically from both companies, and at those prices it better blow me away aesthetically.

In general, I feel Lange has better aesthetics, but the continuous independent Patek history, the devotion of Patek collectors, and the bent of the industry in general probably make buying the Patek safer for resale value down the road, assuming these are going to be as rare and low production as previous generation grand complications.

looking at this photo on my large computer monitor, i honestly can't hardly tell what each subdial is for (exception for the moonphase), granted my eyes are not what they once were but i do not have a need for glasses as yet to get through my day.

Like the Lange more aesthetically, but would still go with the Patek because I'd be more confident I could part with it at a reasonable number if needed.

The use of apertures does make the day and month easier to read, but there's just something about the layout of the Lange that really puts a smile on my face. The color contrast with the moon phase and the blue hands really makes the dial "pop" IMO.

I too love the hands and moon phase on the lange. It certainly wins in that regard.

Owning either one of these would be a dream come true for many, myself included.

Thanks for posting the comparison review Tom, I've seen it previously, but I'm sure some others may have not.

Another comment I have regarding the comparison is in regards to the pushers. I've heard and read many reviews regarding the 5204's mono pusher on the crown for the split second function and how it add's to its allure, and complexity perhaps. Personally, I much prefer the pushers on the 1815. They remind me of those on the 5970, which is one of the greatest looking chrono's ever made, (next to the Datograph of course ). The 5204's round pushers, being similar to those on the 5960, just don't look as good as the rectangular version, IMHO.

Both great great watches. But in this case I am leaning towards the Lange. The blue and golden hands are beautiful, plus the decoration of the movement is to die for. I can see Lange having a far higher demand by collectors which should take care of the resale value issue. Again both watches are just spectacular!
