Is it safe to buy a new Rolex in Cancun?
I will be at a resort south of Cancun in a few months and am thinking of taking advantage of the duty/tax free status to buy a new Submariner. There is an AD in Cancun. Any thoughts on buying the watch there?
Cheers, Mike |

No worries (thousands of people people do it) however taxes still apply when you come back to the US.

It's safe to buy it there; just don't take it into the water...

Why would it not be safe if Rolex has an AD there?

By all means buy the Rolex, but whatever you do, do not eat beans in a local restaurant as I once did.
Have you ever had to sit on the loo in a cruiser cabin for 24 hours without a break. I did and it was not pleasant. Regards Mick |

Reminded me of the line in the movie The Godfather "leave the gun, take the cannoli"
As to OP: While Im sure it would be fine to buy it there, I don't see an advantage to it. In fact you may end up paying Mexican taxes at the point of purchase and then again upon entry to the US. Just a thought to consider..... If you are stuck on buying from an AD and are from the US, I might consider arranging to buy it from an AD out of your state and having it FEDEX'ed I believe taxes would not apply in this case. |

But how much would you really be saving? Is it really worth the effort?

Is it safe to buy a new Rolex in Cancun?
While there is a duty (tax if you like that word) upon declaring the value, you have a chance to save some money if you can get a good negotiated price. The duty you pay upon re-entry is based on that final value. Also, you are only going to pay the Federal duty - not the fulload of state and local sales taxes upon re-entry.
The calculus for you is to know the best deal you could get from a trusted TRF seller for BNIB exemplars of your desired model(s). Then you'll know whether the Cancun AD deal is good or not even including the US duty. And remember, TRF sellers aren't charging sales tax

I have bought all my watches in Cancun. First of all, you get super great prices and since they sell so many, they can get you almost any piece you want. As ec51 mentioned, do the tax back, wear your watch and use Fedex for the Box and Papers.
