TAG Heuer Bringing Smartwatches To Market

The head of TAG Heuer has told Swiss newspaper NZZ Am Sonntag that they are planning to launch a smartwatch, “but it must not copy the Apple Watch.” Their plans are to present their smartwatches by next spring at the latest. TAG Heuer and indeed the entire watchmaking industry are facing competition from smartwatches and it appears that the iWatch Apple Watch (I’m never going to get used to that!) has them spooked.

Before I go any further, I must express a degree of frustration at TAG Heuer’s announcement citing the Apple Watch. Apple have not been a bellwether for technology innovation for at least three years now. Their products do not innovate but replicate and build on the success of others.

I am reminded of the Thomas theorem.
"It is not important whether or not the interpretation is correct — if men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences." — the W.I. Thomas theorem.

The Apple Watch will have a big following of those who love Apple products and like to sport the latest techno gadgets..

But will this:

Apple-Watch-iWatch-editions.jpg

take the place on the wrist of those who like to sport high-end time-pieces, or even those who just want a nice watch ? I do not see this as the same as the Quartz watch invasion of the 70's/80's that decimated the Swiss watch industry.

Never. Since Apple's watch is easily replaceable and with any tech product it will never hold its value. Since Apple would be more than likely to announce newer versions every year.

TAG panicked, this is why TAG is always third or forth tier, even though they made a few interesting high end pieces

I can see Swatch bringing one in at the top end of their plastic line and it depends on whether they want to be it as interesting (or even more interesting) as the Moto 360 android watch.

The next level up could be a Tissot Touch variant with titanium and steel options, at a £600+ price point.

Plenty of opportunity for the Swatch group

.... though a Bondroid edition for Omega would be a silly move

If Garmin had any initiative they'd be "Androiding" it also.

It takes Rolex 7 years to produce a decent bezel option (IMO) for the GMTc and then they stick it on a £20,000.00 watch.

There's even a waiting list for these bloody things.

I doubt if they're worried about releasing an Android version.

... though if they get spooked enough to bring a selection of decent dials to the SS Daytona to keep sales moving for the next 15 years, that would be nice.

I'm not holding my breath though.

Tag is so far off of my radar, I could honestly care less. If Omega, for example, did this, I would be really bummed out. Still, I think it is a horrible move for Tag.

Technology and trends move so fast. I don't know if TAG has the pockets to really funds this in the long run. One more for the techno dumpster.

Agree completely. Tag has really lost their way over the last decade. Sunglasses, phones, and now smart watches.

My first 'luxury' watch was a Tag Heuer Monza. A watch I still have to this day. It was a great buy back in the day and a very nice piece. It's sad to see Tag randomly grasping at straws to find other business areas.
