Come on, Rolex...wake the hell up and give us what WE want!!

That's right all you tossers out there in Geneva. I've just got off the new Rolex website.

For Christ's sake give US what WE want.....and not what YOU fellas want to ram down our throats.

So what have we got out of Basel this year?

1. An over-the-top, pumped up Sea-Dweller with professional features too damned professional even for a professional!!

2. Superb new 41 mm Day-Date babies with mind-blowing aesthetics, but sadly waaaaaay out of reach for most of us.

3. Oyster Perpetual models that look so damn silly, they made even my grand-daughter look at them and scratch her little head.

4. White Gold (what they hell were they thinking ) Subs with an insipid blue that comes no where even close to the existing stunning blue of our beloved BLUESY!!

5. A Special Edition, pimped up, puny 34 mm Datejust - the kind Paris Hilton and the Playboy girls might lap up!!

For heaven's sake, Rolex....wake up to reality and starting looking after OUR needs.

JJ

My Dear Paris,

I have recently acquired a trinket in the form of a
Rolex Datejust. I understand you are particulary enamored with this model.
I assure you it is, as suggested by Rolex Officianados, most lappable.
Please drop by at your earliest convenience and experience
my lapper.

Fully wound,

Mrdi

SD has historically been ill-distinguished from the Sub line. People would get the SD instead of the Sub because they preferred it without the cyclops. The new SD is finally stepping out of the Sub's shadow, and will probably become a Rolex icon once people get used to it.

If you want to see Rolex reclaim its identity as a maker of "tool watches," here it is. It's probably the most rugged, durable sports watch ever made. It's also likely to have a US SRP around $9000, but the market for functional inexpensive analog watches has evaporated, and the new SD is a rugged functional watch that also makes a bold statement.

If I were going to get a second Rolex, it would be this.

Frankly, though, if you want to talk about a bling aesthetic, the president bracelet, and those big solid gold oyster cases has always been the bling-bling answer to the more sophisticated Patek or Vacheron dress watches.

Rolex is finally adjusting to the fact that you can't sell a thing like this in 36mm, and the other manufacturers of dress watches will probably scale up a bit as well. But 41mm is a big leap and a lot of bling.

I don't get it. You blast the prices, but you dislike the more affordable entries?

I think Rolex is trying to position its 34 and 36 mm mens watches to be more attractive to women, who are also wearing larger watches.

I really like the blue ceramic and enamel blue dial, actually. A solid gold watch should be a little flashy, and that sets it off well.

I'm not into solid gold sports watches, but Rolex has a market for them. I think the solid WG Sub with the blue dial/bezel will probably become one of those icons.

If they keep the TT Blue in production, I'm sure the blue would look more similar to the old one set with YG accents.

The DJ special editions are for women. Women like diamonds. All of the weird special edition watches are clearly for women. This would be an abomination on a man, but it's a very nice watch for a woman.

Well said JJ, I'm pretty amazed. If you look at other brands their was some nice watches that I think all of us would think are very nice, look at the new Seiko's for goodness sake, they came out with some sharp models. Omega is now going with applied markers and in house movements, very Rolex like without all the new bling, they look great. I seriously think they have a bunch of 18 year olds with their hats on sideways designing some of their new models. Even JJ's first love, his BLUESY, has now been turned Viagra blue, what is going on.

Dear Mr. Irani,
We at Rolex have received your letter (referenced above) and forwarded it to Omega who will now be handling your needs. Further outbursts like this will result in confiscation of your Platty in exchange for this equivalent 30mm Rado:

Good lord, I see it now.

Basel 2009

Rolex announce the Sheepmaster, the Tossmaster, the Bastidmaster and the Baldmaster! All watches to feature traditional blue bezel and face and shiny, shiny gold.

Special edition Baldmaster to feature Chromadome Bezel in a sunkissed Kiwi skin shade.

Rumour has it that Basel 2010 will show 50mm DD III for only $29.99. As for the ceramic Pepsi...even JJ can't get the bleedin' bleed problems corrected!

That's it, the new blue subby is nicknamed "Viagra."

Probably fits well because the guys who have that type of expendable income are buying both.

the deep sea is imo the best thing they made in years

the 41 mm president is great, other metals will follow

some of the new daytona's look great

I don't get you point JJ, I'm pretty hapy with those new watches.

Besides, Rolex sells over 800.000 watches per year (which is more than the Panerai + Patek + Vacheron + Audemars Piguet + Breguet + Girard Perregaux + Ulysse Nardin + Zenith + Hublot + ... a few others total YEAR production)
So I don't see any reason why they should listen to some guys on a certain forum.
The whole world is buying them

I hear you. The build up to Basel has been emense this year and I feel disappointed with the outcome.

The DS is the best of the bunch.
