CHOOSING A ROLEX MODEL: matter of aesthetics alone OR age and affordability?
just sitting here wondering whether members of this forum in a particular age group tend to buy specific models/types.
i could be generalising but i feel the older members of the forum do tend to lean towards materials other than say ss, opting for tt or gold etc; and having fussier dial options etc. is this the case of aesthetics alone or simply that they can afford the more expensive options, your thoughts please... harvey ps im new to the forum, so apologies if this has been discussed before. |

Harvey, Very roughly if we can generalize younger people do not use gold that much and prefer steel - but there are exceptions. For example, I am young and I do have a bi-metal cronograph. However my second watch is SS - only the bezel is white gold. Now I want to get a SS alone. In addition, I think we should not mix aesthetics per se (and bling maybe) with gold vs steel; aesthetically great watches do exist in YellGold and WhGold as well as in SS; the opposite holds true as well, I 've seen ugly watches in SS alone.

Personally im 24 and feel much more comfortable with SS. Just Bought the Milgauss and its perfect. I think Yellow gold is definitely for older men ( well over 35). Im Sure the price also has significance on this too but i think it is more the aesthetics as you say. I would wear white gold because of the colour but the price is rather high. So basically i agree with both your statements and am now confused!

I'm late 30's and have both the SS and YG, i didn't choose the WG as it looks very similar to ss.
with ss the main thing is it is more scratch resistant, my yg gets scratches from just wiping the bezel. |

I'm 38, and for personal wear, I stick with stainless steel sport watches. I have had, and have currently, yellow gold models - but I don't wear them much.
Generally speaking, I see the all gold models on older guys - 50-60 years old. |

I'm 21 and I have a 16610 Sub Date (SS), my dream watch right now is the GMT-II C in SS.
I'm generally not too fond of the two tone look. My preference in terms of looks is either SS or full gold (yellow or red), but I like SS more at this point. I definitely don't see myself wearing any gold watch, at least not before I hit late 30's or 40's.

Just call me middle-aged and crazy, but I prefer SS watches. I wouldn't mind having a gold dress watch, but since I don't wear a suit very often it's not high on my priority list. Two tone watches are not my thing, but my WIFE does have a few

I'm 50 and like to think with two teenage kids I appreciate new styles but I grew up with the 2 tone look so this still appeals to me. But most of my watches are indeed SS and Titanium.

Im 38 and although I like the look of either all gold or all SS, I prefer the steel look because
1. the cost of the watch is cheaper than gold 2. Im afraid if I wore an all gold watch I may get mugged 3. My DJ can go with a suit, or with everyday wear 4. Harder to scratch up than gold |

I (56) prefer SS, specially on "tool" watches. At least we should pretend we use them as tools

I have bought based on functionality.
Owing to my lifestyle and my work, maybe a Datejust wouldn't be the right choice. Also my ageing eyes prefer a slightly larger diameter. My choices get made based on my needs, no on my age or any perception of what I think is appropriate to my age. C |

Very difficult to categorise, but heres my take.
SS is a little more relaxed looking and a whole lot more durable. Never been keen on the TT thing, but that is purely personal. The Gold thing for me says "arrived" "distinguished" "mature". If I had to have a "dress" watch them the Rolex Prince for me.

I'm 61 and enjoy a dash of subtle bling.
I love my Platty 'cause it does have a precious metal (Pt) dial and bezel. I also love TT models as well as full gold models. Can't afford the latter, unfortunately.....but my next dream watch could well possibly be this one!!

I'm 35 and appreciate SS, TT and yellow or rose gold. But 10 years ago, I would have bought a 16610 instead of Bluesy.
