This is a fair and very instructive post. One point to consider, without eBay, we might have to close down the Watch Out sub-forum for lack of entries.

A new lexicon - factory, custom, aftermarket, Italian et al all have exclusive meanings on ebay Rolexworld. Plus you've got to count those links, check the b & p and of course due dil on the seller. Oh, and those seller's that are 'Rolex Specialists' have no actual connection with Rolex.

If you're a simple buyer and want something that says Rolex on the (neon) dial, has a Rolex movement, a couple of carats of junk quality diamonds and comes with a meaningless insurance appraisal for mega bucks, eBay has a ton of those.

I doubt it's fair to say that most Rolexes on ebay are fake and certainly not fair to say they virtually all are. But if authenticity is important to you ebay is indeed a tough minefield to navigate.

And of course there's the straight-up fraudulent listings that they guys on this forum do an excellent job of catching.....

Vendetta Against eBay!

I have been posting in watchout for years. My view is, most complete watches are NOT fake, it is far less than some may think, as for some parts being not original that's different. I check my corner of the world, Australian eBay weekly and come across others just searching the bay worldwide. It depends how deep you wish to look, what is your definition of a fake ? . I report fake watches only generally. However, I see many frankenwatches and do not report it as there's nothing illegal about an aftermarket diamond bezel and their are just too many resprayed dials. Thousands of listing could be classed as fake in a copyyright sense IMHO. For example, the plethora of custom dials priced at 200-300, most never saw the inside of a Rolex factory. Surely it's illegal to cut out brass in the shape of a dial and print Rolex on it. I am not sure about the original Rolex plates that are resprayed with added diamonds are they illegal ? Or not ? I would not buy it either way. If we include these listings, it is a much higher % of fakes. I come from the perspective of someone who buys and sells on eBay. I would like to say first, eBay is extremely dangerous for sellers, I keep running into scammer buyers more and more and PayPals new rules, well don't get me started.. Look them up. As a buyer, I have the expertise to buy on eBay when I see a bargain, but rarely do, as I have other channels to acquire my watches. However, thinking from a buyers point of view, paypal is great, I have no concerns. I certainly have restraint, and have lost out on a few deals. I am cautious with low feedback sellers or listing with poor photos which do not allow for authentication, I just pass on them. My two cents cheers.

Everyone is prone to hyperbole who knows how many watches on EBay are not what they are supposed to be. What we do know is that there are quite a few bad ones and more often than not when someone asks about a watch they wish to purchase on EBay the majority of responses, if not all of them, on TRF steer the buyer to the "no risk" transaction option with a TRF trusted seller.

There are plenty of good sellers on EBay but plenty of not so good ones too! As a potential buyer one should know the risks and the options. The final decision is up to the informed buyer.

This is like pursuing world-peace. Nice thought, but will it happen?

I heartily concur with your sentiment, Sub, and appreciate the input from David, and his eBay seller's perspective.

I bought teo high end watches if Ebay and sold them to trusted sellers here on trr who resold them. One was Ap 15300.
Ebay has 1000s of luxury watch listings, and almost all are legit. Few bad apples, yes, but buyers are protected
Unless you buy from a trusted seller here, TRF is s much riskier place to buy a watch.
You have to do your hinework, whether its ebay or trf.
If i were you, id advise newbies to go to ad and stop smashing ebay,

i Sell on e-bay but I don't buy on e-bay. I don't need to question the authenticity of what I sell. Have never had bad feedback on any that i have sold.
