What sound am I hearing?

I'll admit, I don't know much about the mechanical movement of a watch. I know that they look pretty complex and masterfully designed, at least the movements of luxury brands. I only own Rolex and I have noticed that in the mornings when my bedroom is silent I can heard a sound coming from my watch that is either still on my wrist or if it's on the nightstand. It seems to get louder every 10 seconds or so and then fades away.

All of mine have done that. You'll notice if you lay them down on a wooden surface, the noise is amplified. Almost like a "dinging" sound.

You must have super hearing ears or something. I couldnt hear mine at all and i sleep with mine.

It's less noticable if you are wearing the watch because your skin absorbs the vibrations of the movement...

I don't hear mine. And I keep my GMT on my night table next to my head at night.

As I said in an earlier thread on this topic, I'm glad all you young whippersnappers can still hear a watch tick. I can't hear mine if I put it to my ear, let alone several feet away on a nightstand. I can, however, still hear my Timegrapher tick.

I love hearing mine but the conditions have to be just right for me to hear that beautiful ding... ding... ding...
I've found that ETA movements are much easier for me to hear than my Sub though. I can hear my DOXA through the pillow at night! MY Omega falls somewhere in between the two as far as hearing it running.
To the OP, basically you have a miniature engine running in that case, it's gonna purr!

i resemble that remark ,,,

a life in sound reinforcement , heavy engineering , and commercial diving , along with a lot of time beside things that go bang ,,, im happy if i hear the alarm in the morning.

According to my latest exam I'm at the "hearing aids would be a benefit but if your wife has not yet threatened to shoot you for having to repeat everything" stage. Regardless, I can hear my Rolexes as well. This happens in bed at night, when all is quiet and I have my left arm tucked up under my head, my wrist near my left ear. It's a whirring noise that seems to rise and fall. I have zero knowledge of the inner workings but suspect it comes from the rotor?? BTW, my wife has threatened to shoot me but she's a terrible shot so I have not felt the urgency for hearing aids.......yet.

The watch movement enters periodically in resonance with the whole watch case, ant it produces this "ringing/ticking sound that you can hear when you wear your watch to bed.

Same phenomenon with the table, the movement enters in resonance with the case and the table plate amplifies it, just like a speaker membrane.

My wife always leaves her watch in the dining room when she goes to bed, because she says she can hear her Explorer I "ringing" from time to time on the bedside table.

And I'm used to this ringing/ticking sound that occurs from time to time as I always wear my watch to bed.
Note that this does not happen with low frequency movements (18 800/hour) that my vintage Rolex watches feature.

For non believers, you can experiment this phenomenon by putting your watch against your hear for a minute, you'll notice the difference between the normal/regular ticking sound and the "ringing ticking sound" that occurs for a few seconds when the movement enters in resonance with the watch case.(modern Rolex models only, 28 800/hour).
