The Popes and Rolex's???

Since the Pope is in the U.S. I was wondering how many and which one(s), if any, of the them have worn Rolex's? If possible, confirm with a photo.

I've not yet seen clear pics of Benedicy xvi's watch yet. Great successor to JP II, to Peter!

As the Pope's security is undertaken by the Swiss Guard, I wonder if any Swiss timepieces have made it into the Vatican?

I was just watching the Pope in NY, and I saw his watch...definitely not a rolex...it was gold on a leather strap. Perhaps a Patek?

I would count on it being a Patek, I have heard that this current Pope, Benedict has some expensive taste. Such as custom made Prada Loafers, as well as his Papal garments made from various other famous luxury designers.

Pope and Prada -- Debunked

The trademark red shoes of Pope Benedict XVI are reportedly handmade by a cobbler in northern Italy not Prada, as rumored. Pope Benedict revived the traditional papal red shoes, which had not been worn since early in the pontificate of Pope John Paul II. Housing and benefits yes.

Watches etc would most likely be gifts.

It's a tradition thing to symbolize the blood of martyrdom. Call me old fashioned but I suppose the red shoes are pretty tame compared to the questionable outfits I see certain people wearing today. Here's a quote:

"Theology Professor Lawrence Cunningham of Notre Dame, in a podcast for NPR.org, said the Pope's red shoes symbolize the blood of martyrdom.

'Traditionally, in the Catholic Church, the color red commemorates the blood of martyrdom ... Fire and red are identified with the Holy Spirit,'Cunnigham said."

Good one Bo. I'm getting ready for church now. I will use that line if someone brings up the Prada subject.

Dalai Lama ???

O.K. no Pope/Rolex sightings. Here's a tidbit about the Dalai Lama. Since childhood, the Dalai Lama has been an incorrigible tinkerer. He still has a Rolex watch given to him by U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt -- a credit to his do-it-yourself skills. As a youngster, he amazed and annoyed elders by repairing Tibet's three cars, the legacy of a previous incarnation, and then secretly taking one for a spin. That day, the boy king learned the hard way about the need for reliable brakes. He also once took apart and repaired an old film projector, all without any instructions. I Googled this.

Boy some comments have gotten off-topic.

Anyway, when John Paul II (the Great) died he had nothing. No expensive watch collection, no cabinet of red shoes... and buried in a wooden box. He ministered until the end. May Benedict XVI have a long pontificate, but when that great man passes into heaven, he won't have anything either.

Kind of make one think about our individual situation in life. Our watches mean absolutely nothing in the end. We can hem and haw, complain and criticize as common in a overly cynical world. But, what have we done to be good people?

I absolutely saw a picture of JP2 wearing a TT DJ.

He was wearing white and had his arm up. The Rolex was clearly visable.

Such a poignant statement you've penned, fear, and it kind of puts things into perspective, doesn't it - we come into the world with nothing and no matter what trappings we acquire throughout our lives, we leave with nothing.

Any good deed that we can do for another should be done there and then, as we shall not pass this way again. Just something to ponder on.
