Timex Military watch

Hey everyone ! It's been FOREVER since I've been on here, but I'm still alive ! lol

Been into some Timex ( ghasp ! lol ) watches lately. First I picked up this off Amazon:

For $25, I can't really complain. It was a nice watch but I returned it several weeks after wearing it. Why ? The ticking of that quartz movement was SO incredibly LOUD I couldn't sleep with the watch on at night ( whenever I wear a watch in rotation, I never take it off my wrist ). That tick was the most annoying EVER. Next, this size was very small, but manageable. I wanted a basic watch that had no date, was cheap and very reliable.

All was well and good even WITH the loud ticking when, after about two weeks goes by and I notice it lost almost two entire minutes ! For a quartz movement this to me in unacceptable, so I just sent it back, and ended up buying this:

Basically, it's the same watch as the one I sent back to Amazon but this one is a manual wind mechanical watch. This is vintage ( probably in the mid to late 80's I'm guessing ? ). The owner of the watch didn't really tell me much as to it's origin, but it's in GREAT shape and keeping excellent time so far. I picked it up on ebay for a little over $100. The sweeping second hand is very quiet too, a very welcoming bonus over the last model. It says "water resistant" on the watch face, but I'm guessing it's only to like 30 meters if that. Does anyone have any info on this Timex military watch ? I done some research and there's really not much out there on these.

I bough mine in the late 80's - the shop that sold them here in the Uk marketed them as a GI watch - but that might just be marketing fluff, here is mine:

I like them. I have several 1960's Doxas that are very similar. I picked them up for under $200 a piece. I work with dogs, mostly pitbulls, so its nice to have reliable and basically indestructible watches that aren't expensive.

cardiel - yes ! That's the exact same one I have !

I've noticed some pictures of one the looks JUST like the one we have, except the "Timex" font on the dial is straight, not slightly slanted like ours is. My guess is these are a little earlier models of the same watch. How water resistant would you say these watches are today ? Ok to shower with ?

I had a similar looking watch issued by the US Army but it was a manual wind Hamilton with metal case (so light it might've been Ti) and that sucker lasted 20+ years of use and abuse while in field training exercises (combat TTPs). It never stopped working to my knowledge, I just stopped wearing it as I started wearing Casio, Suunto, Seiko diver and the like when in the field and in real life austere environments. The plastic case model later came out and again I was issued one had one but didn't wear it much.

Wow, talk about a coincidence !! lol I've had this watch since Saturday and I love it ! It doesn't keep great time ( for an old manual wind watch, I don't expect it to keep as good a time as my Omegas lol ). I find it gains about 25 seconds a day so far. And these watches are meant to be "worn and thrown away" so I highly doubt any watchmaker can service these movements.

As for the waterproofness, I'm going to take her in the shower tonight to scrub it down since the band is filthy so I guess I'll see just how watertight this watch really is lol

We bought Nephews and Grandsons a very similar version from Marathon for Christmas just passed, and they love them. They say US Government on the dial and came in supposedly Mil-Spec plain packaging. Great lume and seem pretty good for these youngsters.

Patrick - yes I was looking at them too. They are fantastic watches, and they come in both manual wind, and quartz. They also have tritium tubes and glow for like 25 years. Heck, for another $50 more dollars I could've bought a brand new Marathon lol

Well, took her in the shower with me tonight, scrubbed her down with soap and water and survived ! These Timex'es can really take a lickin and keep on tickin ! It's good to know it's still water resistant even after all these years. Granted, I probably won't be going swimming with it anytime soon, but it's nice to know it can get hosed down with water.

I agree that the TIMEX military style watches are a great value.

Picked this one up last month and wear it anytime I don't want to hurt one of my expensive ones...

Wears well, and keeps great time....it has luminous hands and numbers PLUS the INDIGLO option....

Life is good !

I've worn times expedition watches as my work watches for the past 21 yrs.
I'm on my second one as the first went through the washing machine....which did it in.
Great watches. The canvas straps with Velcro are very comfy and last pretty well too.
