List the things you DON'T like in a watch !!
Okay, guys,
This thread is NOT meant to be offensive or hurt anyone's feelings. Just let us express the things we DON'T like about a watch...any watch in general. Please be frank and honest about it. Thanks!! Okay, the things I DON'T like in a watch are... 1. Square watches. 2. Watches on straps, especially that blasted NATO!! 3. Acrylic crystals - must have sapphire only. 4. Dateless watches - date is a must. 5. Complicated watches - too cluttered, happy with just time & date! 6. Watches without screw-down crown. 7. Watches with lug holes, much prefer the smooth lug finish. 8. Quartz watches. 9. Watches with very thin bezels, i.e. too much dial and crystal. 10. Chronographs - stationary second hand drives me nuts!! These are my 10 DON'Ts in a watch. What's yours? JJ

ORANGE WATCHES! I figured I'd throw that in for Ed in his absence
1) Very large numbers i.e the Corum bubbles 2) Very thin or Very small (34mm or less) 3) Odd shaped cases i.e the Oakley's and this new generation stuff 4) TOO MUCH BLING (Jacob & Co.) Other than this list I can usually find something I like in almost any watch

1.Over complicated dials.
2.Blink in any form. 3.All solid precious metal watches yellow or white metal. 4.Quartz watches. but OK in a divers tool watch. But if it ticks like most brands.

Hey Guys,
A couple of things,I don't like any watch that is not of a divers style and I am not particularly keen on homage (read copy of) watches. When I mean homage I mean so close it might as well be fake.A watch with some similarities is OK but the blatant copy jobs. Aaron Last edited by AJC; 16 February 2006 at 09:17 PM.. |

Hmm, let me think...
Any 'ladies' watch - they are stupidly small watches without hour markers etc on the dial Any fake watch is garbage! Any mans watch with diamonds on it - that's not a watch, it's jewellery! Chronographs - who really needs one? white-faced watches with silver hands you just can't read at a glance watches with cheap screw-down crowns that strip their threads and loads more I can't think of right now! |

I don't like chronographs.
I'm not a fan of a 'day' feature. (yes the BM has one, but for how long?) I don't like watches smaller than 39mm. I don't like yellow or rose gold on a watch, period. I don't like gem stones on a man's watch. I don't like complicated dials. I don't like gold dial markers that are painted over. |

I agree, I don't like chronographs. I do like the day feature (I thought you liked it to as the JLC MM has it?) I don;t like watches bigger than 39mm I'm okay with yellot gold (sort of) and love rose gold on a watch - however I dislike white gold. I don't like gemstones on a watch (unless it's a diamond in the case of a platinum Patek). I like reasonably complicated dials. I don't like too much bling, so anything that is too much of any bling is not for me (like JJ's passwind, or an all gold Rolex). |

Well Al, with anything, there are exceptions to the rule, and the day feature on your JLC is an exception. If it's done right, it can be great. I also like the day/date feature on those vintage Rolex moon phase babeis.

Weak lume is my biggest thing.
After that, I don't know. I can find something in most any watch I don't like, the same way I can find stuff I do like.

Not too keen on TT watches. Yes to solid gold or SS
No to great clunking crown guards. No to whimsical yellow spiral second hands. No to the literal number dials. These belong in the submarines from whence they came No to diamond encrusted watch and bracelet pieces. What are they doing? Going for Baroque? (Broke?) No to the little mini lume on a wire which illuminate the wristwatch and says Look at me ain't I expensive!!. PS. These are selling like hotcakes over at another site. No to watches that come with a 100 page instruction manual. Like the idea of a moonphase perpetual 10 year but the very thought of me trying to set it up sends me for another single malt Islay. No to Rolex watches with Domino Pizza or Comex on them. Why would I pay a premium for advertising a slice of Pizza? |

I dislike two-tones,I prefer white gold or platinum
watches larger than 42MM. 36 to 40 is perfect watches with odd shapes Overly large numbers excessive jewelry, Diamond markers I can tolerate, but jeweled bezels are for ladies visible lugs or screw down crystals

Ah yes, I forgot my most important dislike....watch must be at least 40 mm in size - no less!!
Exception to the above rule would have to be ONLY the Exp-II which actually measures up to 39 mm!!

I'm quite surprised that you DON'T like Pannies. I've seen quite a few of them at Mansor's...even handled them and have been most impressed with their heft and finish. I won't say I don't like them, but I certainly wouldn't invest in one of them. However, I do admire them. JJ

Nope, I do not like them at all. Not one of them. I think they are a passing fad, too big and jewelry posing as a dive watch.
My apologies to the guys on this forum who disagree with me.

I also dislike tuna fish and mayonaise, but my son, who I adore, is hooked on it. I still love him though.

"Can't really stand Rolex at all"? But, but, but..... I like both brands, would like a Radiomir Black Seal besides the 16610. What in particular has put yoy off Rolex Daren? If you don't want to start a potentially 'bloody' thread, PM me.

Oh Panerai, Oh dear.....
I like the look of Panerai, but having owned (and sold) a 40mm Pam 48 and a 44mm Pam 005, I'd never buy another.
The finish and quality was terrible on both (G-series, which I think had a few problems), they were way off Cosc specs, the crown protector was fitted 'wonky' on the 005, they glued the bracelet screws in after the service, the 005 stopped and the crown wouldn't pop out so you could re-set it............the folding clasp on the Pam 48 was really uncomfortable, the list goes on. They do come in a lovely box though, with a screwdriver you can't use after they've glued the screws in, a spare strap which is too short, and a COSC sheet which bears no reality to the watch..... Apart from that I love 'em!!! If anyone ever got a good one, which was comfortable and didn't break after 2 months - I envy them! |

I have owned four, and not one problem with them at all. I love the way they sit on the wrist and the fact that they are not on every other wrist I see, yeah a Rolex is whether you want to admit it or not. I have never had any problems with the service or screws, so maybe I am the rare exception, but I doubt it. I like to stand a bit apart from the average crowd, be it good or bad.
Of the two own right now, the 88 is +1 for this entire week and has been on the winder the whole time, the 24 is +1.5 a day and it has been on the wrist the whole time. I am not sure what the YM is, although I did wear it for about an hour last night. I know Panerai is not a horological wonder, but it is what I like, a unique large watch that I never see out and about. And when I do see a person wearing one, there is an instant community that is NON EXISTENT with Rolex owners in public. My sour taste for Rolex has to do with both Rolex USA and also the stigma that goes along with them. I cringe when a person wants to talk watches with me at work, because they only want to talk about their Rolex. How expensive it is, how great it is, yada yada. I don't presume to think all owners are like this, but stereotypes do exist out of truth. To say that Panerai want to be diving watches is funny to me, since that is where their history came from. I never go deeper than the deep end of my pool, and it seems to be okay for that. Of the percentage of owners of SD and 16610, I am pretty sure that not that many of them use them as dive watches, so in effect, they too own a watch posing as a dive watch. The ones that do (like Dave) have every right to talk, but for a person that won't even take their watch in the pool, that holds no water with me. Rolex is Rolex and will always be that. It is a super watch that is rugged and timeless. What do I like best about the brand? The fact that the resell value is so high. I split time between here and a few Panerai sites, and there are some glaring differences I see between Rolex and Panerai owners. One is a true sense of community, this forum may be the only Rolex forum that breaks that rule, if there is another I have yet to run accross it. Another is that Panerai owners almost never seem to think that Panerai is the greatest watch out there, in fact most all own other brands and appreciate the differences. Rolex owners can't stand the differences and have a high propensity to BASH other brands. This is one thing that I have found to be related to all rolex forums. In closing my thesis, I will say that I still own and love my YM, although it gets one day a week max on the wrist. It was bought to mark a special occasion and will stick around through it all. It is just the attitude of many Rolex owners that their watch is the BEST and ONLY watch out there that turned me off the company TOTALLY!!! Although, I have been around these forums long enough to not be surprised by it, the other brand bashing by Rolex owners is almost as reliable as the 3135 itself. Neither one ever seems to fail. Did that answer your question Frans? I hope so.

I will not, however, change my violent dislike for tuna fish and mayonaise, or my longstanding belief that it's revolting. If anybody disagrees with me, they're weird. And that's that!

I love that fact that on this forum, it is about the people not the watches. If we all liked the same things, it would be really boring around here. My point was just that for 99.999999% of watch wearers, it is all about how it looks to them personally, because most of these watches aren't being used for the intended purpose.
