Service recommendation
Hello all, I'd like to get a movement service on my '67 5513. Any recommendations?

Yes yes....I meant on who to send it to? Anyone with a similar watch have a watchmaker they trust? Don't want to send to RSC.
Thanks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Sending your 5513 to the service center could cause you more trouble than its worth. They will most likely want to exchange parts like (Dial and hands).. further more they may not even service the watch unless you change them out...
Any chance you could post a few pictures ?? Best - Last edited by watches4me; 1 February 2015 at 04:10 AM.. Reason: add pic. |

Or Vanessa in Newport Beach. She has a nice video somewhere here on the Site showing her overhauling a 5513..

Dalton He has worked on two of my vintage watches. He keeps you up to date and the service is fast.

Not sure there is anything wrong with it per se but it is 47 years old and I don't know when it was last ,if ever serviced. OCD I guess...

Someone else mentioned not sending it to Rolex. Based on my recent experience I agree. I took my 1655 to a AD in Wayne MI. They recommended Rolex in Dallas. About ten days later they called and said Rolex would not service it and keep it original and "oh, we should have told you that before". No kidding. I have my watch back and plan on taking it to Dominique Wieland in Spring Lake MI.

If it runs well, don't mess with it. There is always a risk of ruining something when it gets a service. And when that happens, they won't be able to replace it with a period correct part.

But then many people would disagree. There are 2 camps of people when it comes to servicing a Rolex.

if you send it to a competent watchmaker (any of the names mentioned), the risk of "ruining something" is hardly a risk. If the watch hasn't been serviced in 47 years, its time to get it pressure checked and CLA at the very least. After 47 years the oils have dried up and the risk of damage is greater leaving it as-is.

But then if you plan to swim, shower, dive, or anywhere near water with it, I agree pressure test is very important.

You don't need to swim to to gain value from keeping the seals intact...simple everyday use can cause moisture intrusion, and since a great deal of the value is in the dial and hands, why wouldn't you want to service a 50 year old watch? |
