HORRIBLE night (Kinda long)
This is most depressing. Last night I meet my friend at our local bar. 1 beer 1 shot each cause we had to go to another bar. As we're leaving about 12 18 year old kids, skateboarder types, could have been or could not have been staring at us. More than likely they weren't but my friend is a violent drunk and he'd been drinking way before I met him that night. So he starts his usual WHAT THE F!#* ARE YOU LOOKING AT?? Do YOU KNOW WHO I AM, etc. One kid says hey man, we're not staring at you, no problem here. Very diplomatic. My friend doesn't stop, he lunges at the biggest one who was probably in his mid 20's and much bigger than both of us. (I'm 5'7 skin and bones, friend 5'10, fit but still slim, stranger 6'1 maybe 180. I'm thinking man, this could ve been so easily avoided. Anyway fighting commences, suddenly I'm surrounded, I'm swinging, hit one guy in the teeth, but I feel the clasp on my President unopening and plop, hits the ground. I'm trying to find my watch, while getting beat down in the process. So long story, we end up in the E.R., I get 9 staples on the back of my head (apparently I got shanked), I'm sore all over, but the ROLEX STOPPED. At the hospital I lost one of the pins and $300. Went to watch guy in diamond district this morning, he said the crown stem(?) was broken, about a week, possibly 2-3 weeks to get it fixed up. The second hand popped out and the dial was sideways! So lost my gold chain, DMV on Monday cause license is gone, Wednesday take the staples out and no watch til Friday the EARLIEST. What a night. Worst part I was 3 blocks from home. Sholuda just called it a night instead of meeting my friend. Sorry for the long story but this was like my worst nightmare, losing or breaking the Rolex.

Steve, so sorry this happened to you. First of all, I'm glad you're going to be all right. I am wondering about why you are still calling this other guy your "friend" when he got you into this...
I hope for your speedy recovery.

Sorry to here your problems, but do you need a friend like that, I do marshall arts and the art is learning to fight in order not to fight, use diplomacy and tact first, whilst watching for the attack and being ready to defend and finish.
Your "friend needs to apologise and lay of the drink if he can't handle it. Sorry for the rant, but in my job I see to many idiots starting the fight coz drink makes them think they are the big man. WRONG big time. Take care

Very good ponits. As said before, I'm 28, I've known this crazy bastard for 14 years-freshman yr in high school. We personally have gotten into many physical fights between us, and have gotten into plenty fights against others. After so many years, it's just hard to say hey buddy, we're not buddies anymore! I'm a silly happy go lucky drunk, he's a moody angry confrontational drunk. These guys got me good! There's no part that's not aching-I can barely eat -my jaws are killing me-they mustve caught me with some good hooks! Yes it could've been worse- but all that was and is on my mind is the Rollie. The dr. was like "you have a 5 inch laceration in the back of your head and you're worried about a watch?"

I had a friend very similar to yours and he would just become very crazy and violent. I decided that I didn't want to put my life in risk, being with these people.
As humans, we tend to learn from bad experiences, so hopefully its an eye opener. |

I hear all of you and thanks for the words of wisdom. It was a painful, EXPENSIVE(watch repair, hospital bill, my father's(who passed away in 1997 R.I.P-That's what really hurts the most) gold chain, the renew license fee, the lost $300 in the hospital, I'd say it was a four figure night in 3 hours. I cut down on the drinking to 3 beers a week and maybe a lil whiskey on the weekends. That's alot better than 6 months ago. At least I was spared Phoenix losing at home???? What's up with that? I know it's the Spurs, but don't get swept!

Ridiculous. Absolute lunacy. Time to mark that "friend" down in the enemy column... I would hope that the "friend" got a sound beating and not just you.
Sorry to hear about the predicament, and wishing you a speedy recovery. |

I ended all of my pre-sobriety friendships and grew up. I knew I wanted a life.
I was getting meaner and meaner after the service. It culminated in to a street brawl that lasted a couple of weeks and sent 6 guys to the hospital. We carried sawed off aluminum baseball bats, chains, knives and, towards the end, guns. I got more and more nuts from the drugs and booze. One day I stop to change a tire and 3 squad cars pull up to see what we are up to. I called the VA Hospital and made the best decision of my life. I've never looked back. My temper went on for a few more years but has settled in the last 20 years. I do not hang around at all with people that drink like that. My wife and I are rapidly approaching old age. Thank God I made the decisions I made otherwise I knew I was heading for prison. The only difference between the criminals and me is I never got caught. Most of us have done something that was illegal or that we are ashamed of. Your friend sounds like he has a lot of growing up to do. In the mean time you need to realize that you got off lucky. One of them might have pulled a gun and you'd be dead. Find some new friends or tell him when you've had enough and go home. You do not need the kind of trouble that he could get you in to. People are accidentally killed all of the time. It is still a manslaughter charge and conviction. A watch can be replaced. You or your freedom cannot be replaced. Terry Newton

stuff like that happened, but you were as likely as not to get SHOT if it did. lucky all you got was beat down. next time it might be a lot worse. unfortunately, it doesnt sound as if you plan on changing anything to avoid it happening again, which doesnt seem too bright from this side of the keyboard... |

Thanks Bo! Funny thing, this was in front of a pizza joint, not a club or bar. And my 2nd fight in the same exact spot. I was dazed, so I didn't see cops, just the ambulance escorting us inside. Trust me J.J., I'm more Coca Cola than Jameson/Wild Turkey/Crown/Jack these days. Actually for 2 years I was a full blown alcoholic-not bragging but 8-10 pints every day and end the night at said bar with 5 Jameson/wild turkey neats. I can't (well I can) do that anymore. Im not a kid anymore! I know now when to say enough. Before it was drink til u puke. Our motto we got from Cash Money Millionaires(rappers for those that don't know) "Cash Money motto is to drink til u throw up". Stupid and immature, but thats how we did.
