What Else Could You Have Bought...

...for the price of a Rolex?

Best money I ever spent was on Lasik eye surgery. I wore glasses for 30 years. No more. A$3250 per eye.

Exactly, Terry. Do you have a picture of your beauty? My bicycle riding friends tell me it's the "new golf"!

I bought some dentalwork so I could have the nice, bright smile I'd always wanted. I don't even want to say what kind of Rolex it could have bought!

Do you ride alone or in a formal or informal pelleton? How many miles/km do you do in a ride?

Good for you Lisa. My fangs have been OK, but my wife's were problematic to say the least. We had to go to an implant for one. That one tooth would buy a Rolex! The whole smile? Let's just say if we get divorced (we won't!) I'm taking half the teeth!

Just like my wife, Lisa. She has had 2 chipped upper teeth and crooked lower teeth for a long time. Her teeth are beautiful except for these imperfections. She was very self conscious of this and decided to finally fix it. She had a tooth pulled from the bottom and wore braces for a year. After those were straightened out, she had the chips fixed with a new process called Lumineers. Her smile is beautiful.

It was all ALOT of $$ but she worked hard for it and she never once questioned the $$ I spent for my LV. However I must say, for what the dental work cost, I could have gotten a Yacht Master...AFTER the price increase!

My wife used our vacation money to buy my GMT. She had just started a new job so we couldn't take the trip anyway.

And your wife is gorgeous with braces, too - that's the picture of her I remember best.

Lasik still scares me silly. I know they have a good track record, but I only have my two eyes, eyeglasses and all. Glad you have had great luck.

Mr. President had to veto the cabinets.
First Lady DJ will have to wait a bit.

I typically ride with an attorney friend of mine. he is 72 years old and I paid $3,250 for his bicycle. He discounted my suit as the homeowner only had $100,000 policy. When I found out Blue Cross paid for my surgery as well I treated him to a bicycle. We ride up to 70 miles though typically ride 35 - 40 miles per ride. There are other gentlemen that I ride with as well though Dick is my all time riding buddy. (When his wife let's him )

I ride well over 2,000 miles in our short riding season in Northern Michigan. I would ride more if I lived in a place that did not get, on average, 120" of snow per season.

Life's good .

Congratulations on the Lasik surgery. You're much better looking than Col. Klink .

Guys, I understand "The Fear" because I felt it myself. But avoiding something out of fear rather than reason is irrational. As the article says, Lasik has been cleared by NASA and US Navy for aircrew...

I am sure there are bad Laser eye surgeries, just as there are bad doctors, dentists, lawyers and plumbers. I think if your toilet was backed up you'd still call a plumber - you'd just get a good one.

It's a bit like buying a watch: Go First Class!

My surgery was done by Dr Chris Rogers, who did the first ever eye surgery in Australia, and is a partner in one of Australia's best eye clinics. www.theeyeinstitute.com.au

I had the new(ish) Intralase technology, which creates the corneal flap using a laser, so no blade touches your eye. Since introducing this in 2004, my clinic has done about 4,000 procedures without a single problem with the corneal flap.

I am 49 with presbyopia creeping up, so I had "monovision" correction, where one eye is set for long sight (vision is much better than 20:20) and the other, in my case, left untouched because its shortsightedness was fine for reading. Dr Rogers talks in terms of three zones of vision: "phone directory", "middle vision" and "distance". My right eye is "distance" and will always be good for that. My left is naturally set for "phone directory". With my current ability to change focus, I can cover "middle vision" with either eye. I was advised that as I get older the closest focus would move away from me and when I was in my sixties I might need glasses for extended reading.

I am rapt with the results. I had some flare off bright objects at night for a few weeks. I was told (by an independent optician) that this is due to the trauma to the cornea and clears as the cornea heals. My experience bore that out.

If you wear glasses do yourself a favour: Research the best surgery you can find; go for a check up and listen to what they tell you. If you are a good candidate - go for it!

If you're still squeamish, consider doing one eye at a time.

Thank you. I'm sure you're not really a muppet!

Those are some big miles. My friends do 40-50km rides (20-25 miles) although they seem to be big on hills and do rides called stuff like "The Two Gorges".
