Explorer in the Cards

Hi all,

I recently developed an itch to buy an Omega AT, but a few members and some fantastic photos reminded me of my old flame - the Explorer. So I did some digging and found out that an AD I've purchased from before has a pre-owned 114270. It's a Y serial, so they place it circa 2002. I was able to check the watch out in person, and it appears to be in fantastic shape. Better yet, before placing it up for sale the AD sent it back to Rolex for a service. On top of that, the price seems good based on comparable posts on the sales corners of various forums. So, do I take the plunge? Does it sound perfect? I worry that if I don't pick it up sooner, it's just going to get harder and harder to find, and more expensive too.

I'm also curious if there were any changes to the 114270 over the course of it's manufacturing (2001-2009 as far as I can tell). The only one I know about is the addition of the rehaut at some point. Has the movement (3130) remained identical? Any other changes?

I'll end this post with a photo I snapped before placing it on layaway. Thanks for looking, everyone.

That's a real beauty...sounds like a good match if you want it.

I wouldn't worry about any 'upgrades' you would be missing out on...the only significant thing I can think of that happened to the EXP was the change of size to the case size of 39mm...so unless you would rather have the larger size, then it sounds like you are all set.

I traded in an AT for a 114270. The Exp 1 is the way to go.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I definitely feel myself gravitation toward jumping on it. The 36mm size works well for me, as I am fairly slim and have a small wrist. I think it's the perfect balance of sporty and classy. Here's another shot...

You will not regret. The 36mm explorers are classic and elegant, with robustness to boot.

I bought my Y series Explorer 1 in 2004 and love it. Came back last year from RSC from it's second service.

My 214270 (39mm) version has a 3132 movement which has the parachrom hairspring and paraflex shock absorbers. The hairspring is said to be anti magnetic and the shock absorbers are supposed to provide additional protection. How much difference there truly is and how much is marketing, I have no idea. My wrist is barely 7" and I can get away with wearing a 42mm watch but frankly, the 39mm Explorer feels a lot more comfortable. The Explorer also looks great on other bands but the ss bracelet with the Easylink is superb. If for no other reason, I'd consider the newer Explorer for the bracelet.

Congrats on what sounds like a great find. I've owned a lot of Rolex sport models, and I love them all. But the 36mm Explorer 1 is one I keep coming back to for its unbeatable simplicity, comfort and versatility.

And to answer your question, other than the engraved rehaut, I'm not aware of any changes within the reference.

Cheers,
-GW

There isn't much difference between the two movements. I read on another thread that when you send the 3130 in for service they use the new 3132 parts. I would go with whichever you like more.

my first Rolex funnily enough was also a Y serial explorer I that I have had since 2003 and will never ever sell despite other superior watches in my collection. It was a gift from my parents and one I will never let go. And ofcourse was a 1st Rolex.
