Icon20 Basel 2015 - Calibre 3255

http://rolex-2015-interactive.rolex....ibre-3255.html

"Rolex is introducing calibre 3255, a new-generation mechanical movement with 14 patents, which sets new standards of performance for the core characteristics of a watch movement: precision, power reserve, reliability, resistance to shocks and magnetism, as well as the ease and convenience of its adjustment.

Calibre 3255’s criteria for precision in everyday wear are twice as exacting as those for an officially certified chronometer. It incorporates the new Chronergy escapement patented by Rolex, which combines high energy efficiency with great dependability. Made of nickel‑phosphorus, it is also insensitive to magnetic interference. The oscillator, the true heart of the watch, has an optimized blue Parachrom hairspring, which is also up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. Thanks to a new barrel architecture and the escapement’s superior efficiency, the power reserve of calibre 3255 extends to three days. This means the watch will easily continue to run from Friday evening into Monday afternoon even if not worn or wound."

For now. Derivatives will go into all new models eventually, me thinks.

About time they upgraded the main calibre. The new Omega's 8500 series made the 3135 look very old and dated in terms of tech and spec.

3135 is so good it didn't really need an upgrade. That's why it's so great

Movement looks great in that robust Rolex sort of way.
Love how they don't over decorate, keeping it simple yet robust.

A good and steady evolution, wouldn't expect any less.
Can't wait to see the base module filter down to date only models (assuming it is simply a day module here).

Interesting caliber number - 3255...

I can see a date only "3235" releasing in the near future that could replace the venerable 3135

Sorry can't agree. It's nowhere near as good as Omega's 8500 base movement.

Yes but could you put it back together without having bits left over?

Is this the same movement found in the Tudor line, just re-numbered? Same basic design?

No, I don't think so - the Tudor 5621 has a silicon hairspring. However, both calibers tout a 70 hour power reserve - some technology could be common

It'd be interesting to see both the new Rolex movement and Tudor movement next to each other without the Rotor covering most parts of it.

It would be a shame for Rolex, if they'd be very similar....

Okay, Rolex has a new caliber for the new century. I think that's noteworthy and in the future something for aficionados to look forward to as it filters down to the watches the hoi polloi can afford.

The 3255 is impressive, probably the most impressive thing to come out of the new Rolex lineup. I'm anxious to learn more about it.

The only thing that matters is what's under the hood. Everything else is just an options package.

The 8500 is way too thick.

If that is the case why are watches based on it so thick? The PO is pretty much as thick as the DSSD and only has a fraction of its water resistance.

Sapphire case backs add thickness too.

The PO has twice the water resistance of the standard Sub as well so case will be thicker.

Better to compare the DJ to the AQ where the AQ is about 1mm thicker....which is the sapphire back.

This is probably the most exciting from Baselworld for me this year. Looking forward to seeing the calibre make its way into the Submariner line!!
