1016 v 5513 - which would you chose?
If you were allowed just one vintage Rolex and had to chose between a 1972 Submariner 5513 and a 1989 Explorer 1016, both in very good condition, which would you pick and why?

I'd really have to see both, to be sure. There is just so much variation in "very good" condition between different pairs of eyes. I love both models.

I personally wouldn't go for a 1989 1016 - i'd hold out for a much older model, such as late 60's, where the price drops considerably from the early 60's gilt dial version.

If I could have only one vintage watch, it would be a Sub.

I'm willing to wager that 99% of highly regarded, experienced Rolex collectors would choose a 5513, condition being comparable.

I think there were many more 5513s made and sold than 1016s, judging by how often they come up for sale. I own both (and two 1016s), but can understand the popularity of the Sub. Still, there'd be something neat about owning one of the very last 1016s.

Personal preference imho, 1016's are classic and wear smaller. I have one gilt tropical non chapter that I love to wear. Subs are more plentiful but the catch is finding a really good example of either. Good luck. m

But the bigger question is why are we allowed "just one vintage"? This is the first problem...its impossible to own just one vintage...it can't be done. If the rule is in place by your wife...its time to get a new wife. If the rule is in place by your budget...its time to start a lemonade stand. If the rule is in place by your Mom, its time to run away from home. Get them both and cut back on a few necessities. |

Thanks for the comments guys. So far the 5513 is the clear favourite and I do love this sub but there's something about the simple, tool like Explorer that draws me to it. I'm lucky enough to already have a blue 16613 and a DSSD in my collection. More views welcome.

1016s seem to sell for more. Is that because less 1016s were produced?

Go for the 1016. Understated, classic, simple, beautiful. As nice as the 5513 is, it's another Sub at the end of the day. I'd love to have a beautiful 5513 (who wouldn't) but I'd love to have the right 1016 even more. Take your time. Find the right example of whatever you choose.
