Dress Watches – Rolex, Jaeger LeCoultre and Blancpain

A friend of mine is looking into acquiring a dress watch. He owns a SS Submariner and BLNR and would like the next watch to be a rose gold watch on a leather strap. His budget is $20,000 CAD and would have narrowed it down to the following:

1. Rolex Cellini Time 50505. His initial preference was the model with the white dial and brown leather strap, but when compared seen in person and compared to the model with the black dial and black leather strap, he is not so sure now. To him, both are very nice. 39mm. Price: $17,400 CAD

2. Jaeger LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin 1272510. Very classy and was one of the top two on his list until the Cellini was released last year. I would definitely recommend this as I have owned a SS JLC dress watch in the past. 38.5mm. Price: $15,400 CAD

3. Blancpain Villeret Ultraplate 6223-3642-55. This was the other piece he was comparing to the JLC. I checked this one out the other day with him and in my opinion, the look and fit is on par with the other two watches mentioned above. It also is the only one that has a date function, but it does not matter to him. I do not have any experience with handling Blancpain as I have never owned one before, but it does appear to be a quality brand. 38mm. Price: $16,000 CAD.

The original preference for a dress watch for him was rose gold with a light coloured dial and a brown leather strap. But now, he is willing to entertain the notion of a rose gold watch with dark coloured dial and black leather strap. In terms of size, 37mm to 39mm.

So, if any Forum members have any experience with any of these watches, I would love to hear some feedback. For me, I am leaning towards the Cellini Time, but then I am a huge Rolex fan, so my opinion may be a little biased.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Eric,
Don't have much experience with dress watches, but for me it would be between the JLC and the Cellini. Slight edge to the Cellini white face.

Thanks, Larry. I would tend to agree as the white dial Cellini really looked good to me in pictures and on the Rolex website. However, when I saw it in person and compared it to the black dial model, I think the black dial one looks better now. My friend feels the same way.

I guess it is very true that you really need to see the watch in person as many times, pictures and images do not capture the true beauty of a timepiece.

I tried them on recently and really like them. The Time being thicker and the nicer one I felt. However, the price is way to close to a ALS Saxonia and PP Calatrava for me, even though the Cellini looks and feels fab.

Overwhelmingly 69% for the JLC. This forum has good taste.

JLC. They are the real deal. I have the MUT Moon, Reverso 1931 and Geophysic.

Gotta be the JLC among these three.

If it were the Cellini with date (but not dual time), the choice would have been harder.

JLC but ideally spend a bit more and get the MUT with moonphase. Also really like the Villeret, understated but classy piece.

Thanks for the replies and comments. Not to take anything away from JLC, but I am a little surprised that over 60% voted for it.

The watchmakers watchmaker. Very underrated brand. Just wish they had more sport watches I like.

Ain't it the truth! I like the pics of the polar explorer, but in the flesh I like the black dial better.

Eric and all,

No offense here - but my watch game and study (rolf) has taken me to the conclusion that the only real dress watches I will own and/or buy are made by Patek and Lange. Best.

No offence, Thomas. To each their own and I do appreciate your respectful honesty.

I would tend to agree with you, but unfortunately my friend wants to buy brand new and his limit is 20K. If cost was not a factor, I am sure many would choose to buy a Patek or a Lange.

I went with the Cellini Time in White Face, white gold and black leather strap. I still haven't peeled off the stickers yet, as I want to photograph it before wearing it.
