What kind of crystal is on my 1665?

Is this an original or a replacement? Is it the kind prone to cracking? Is it a superdome or something less super?

Anything I should know?

Superdome. I'd leave it alone. It's what you should want on your vintage 1665.

If you plan to swim / shower with it, I'd put a service crystal on the watch ... or buy something modern.

Technicalities aside, the proper term for it is BADASS.

When they fail, it will most likely be along the edge. I've had to replace about two out of every three crystals so far at service time. Some people recommend replacing these at every service interval but i like the original look a lot so I'll keep mine as long as it passes the pressure test.

This one still passed when last serviced in 2010.

While we are all talking about this... Is the Tropic 25-39 one and the same as the Tropic 39? Or are we talking about two different crystals here...

Well, I'm very happy it's the right one -- I kind of thought it was. I love the distortion and elongation of the markers that it caused, and that's exactly what I wanted.

However, I definitely don't want the watch to leak. What does the service crystal look like? Is the super dome hard to find? I assume yes.

I can keep it out of the water, but how will I know it has failed?

The sides of the service crystals go much higher, giving them them less of a dome look. Picture below is from VintageHour. Finding an authentic T-39 will take some doing, IMO.

Many here love the 1665 for the dome. Authentic ones r rare n expensive. Get it pressure tested. As ling as u dont submerge it in water, ur should b fine.
