Awkward situation at AD
I was at the mall and decided to stop by the AD today to see what was new in inventory. I was greeted by the rep and they offered me water and my little one a jelly fruit candy. I took off my BATMAN to try on a DSSD because I heard so much about the size issue and it didn't seem too bad for me. When I asked to try on the WG Pepsi they asked the security guard to come over.
Has this ever happened to anyone? I was a little shocked that they would have the guard watch me try on the Pepsi. They know I own a couple of Rolex's plus this was the AD that sized my BLNR so they have all my info on their system. What was I going to do, run out the door pushing a stroller and leave my BLNR behind? I thought I'd share my Saturday story will you all. I'm going to Vegas next month and staying at the encore and I'm going to see if they do this at the Wynn AD since I will have some time to kill and watch hunt for that next piece.

My guess is that there are standard procedures in place, per insurance or simply because of individual location policy. I wouldn't take it personally.

Seems strange.
At my AD the doors are always locked, so as you cannot run out. If you get through the first locked door, there is then a second one to contend with. All I can think is that it is an insurance requirement. |

Never happened to me but perhaps it is an issue with their insurance company requiring the guard be nearby when high value watches are out of the case?

Well, with all respect you say they "sized" your stainless Rolex...correct? They did NOT sell it to you?
Do you have a personal relationship with this dealer (bought multiple watches from them)? If not, they are doing what they need to do to protect their business--they probably don't know you as much as you might know them. Any who, Wynn will have more security by the door and are use to 'shopper' types and I'm sure will be fine. |

I would guess that this protocol is in place because there was a prior incident.

I would agree. Probably an internal policy due to insurance.

This isn't out of the ordinary.
One AD here in San Diego takes a photocopy of your DL. There's signs posted that this is store policy. On top of that they gave an armed guard who stands by. |

Insurance requirement no doubt. Sure -awkward -not personal though.
I've been in some smaller ADs over the years and one of them took my license and putti in the case while I tried on watches -while one of my subs just sat and watched. Didn't bother me at all. |

Yeah just a precaution. I've been buzzed through before by two rough looking doormen at an AD who more or less asked me to state my business. It might not have been you they were wary of but the small chance of an opportunist snatcher watching from outside. You can't be too careful. In their shoes, why would they make their jewellery store easier to rob?

I just spit some water out when I read that reply For the OP, probably just happens to be a policy.

Like most said, sounds like protocol for insurance purposes. You won't have that problem here in Vegas. I've been able to try on platonas and the BLRO no problem. They have security guards, but basically guard the entrance. Have fun while you are here. And enjoy the mini museum at the wynn rolex.

Now that is funny and a good one that I have not heard in a long time!
The guys at the AD are really good guys so I did not take it personally and I'm sure it's just protocol but it was really obvious when I said let's try on the Pepsi and they wouldn't take it out of the case until the guard came over.

Not personal...just business. They have to do what they need to do to ensure nothing happens when you try it on. Then again maybe I'm just use to that kind of thing any time I walk into a Rolex AD here in the states...even though I own eight Rolex's. Staffs quietly wonder if I can afford items even though when I walk in I'm wearing my DSSD, BLNR, TT DJ II or Yachtmaster II. I guess I'm just use to it.

Due to increasing insurance policy claims due to thefts of luxury goods from retail stores, some ADs request copies of driver licenses now.
At the worst watch store in the world that is Tourn88u, they used their entire security staff to surround me when I requested to try on a JLC RDM. I'm not Marshawn Lynch nor even look the part. LoL |

As above, don't take it personally. At least you can be sure your wallet is safe...unless you buy something!

My brother came to visit me in the bad old late 1980s, while I was living in Newark. He thought it would be funny to bring a bottle of MD 20/20 to his supervisor in New Haven. It's a wine product that is generally the last step on the slide into oblivion and destitution. To get the Mad Dog, we had to go to my neighborhood liquor store. I said to my brother "Whatever you do, don't put your hands near your pockets." My brother thought that was hysterical, until we were buzzed into the store and the clerk greeted me with "Oh, hey, it's you. OK. What can I getcha?." He then put the shotgun he had pointed at my chest back on the counter. I'm sure it was loaded, it was a Friday night.
It's not the value of the goods or the perceived likelihood of mischief, it's just finding the right standard of doing business securely in a given venue.

With the rash of recent smash and grabs concerning Rolex watches, it is no wonder that ADs are very cautious with their inventory, especially watches in the near 40K range. I guess I cannot blame them for tighter security.

It's nothing personal, I'm sure it's just a security measure.
