For many the Lange movements are the best there is, in finish and beauty they are hard to beat, here are a few pics of movements, from the Datograph and another the Zeitwerk, hope you enjoy, for me they are just mechanical masterpieces and are insanely beautiful

Amazing, aren't they? Few watchmakers can match Lange's artistry in movement decoration. In fact, I think they are the best out there. I am still wondering why I have not got one yet.

I am seriously thinking getting a Datograph, but what bothers me is that the best one the UP/DOWN, is at least 65K, whereas the first model is around 40K, 40 is acceptable for me, 65 not really, don't really care about the power reserve but the 41mm is better as the watch is quite thick, I need to try a 39mm one day to see how it wears but most people say it's wears very high on the wrist, which is something I don't like very much. In any case as far as movements go I think they are number 1 for the manual movements, for the automatic ones they are way behind as they have awful looking rotors, can't understand why they don't redesign their rotors, they are just horrible IMO

Here's one of their auto movements, the rotor alone makes it not great IMO, but for manual ones, not all as some as "hidden", they are clearly the best, I don't know of one Patek movement as beautiful as the Datograph movement

Yes, the 39mm sits rather high up and the smaller dial size kind of exaggerate the thickness compared to the 41mm up/down. I've tried it and it's too small for me. If the price is hard to stomach, you might want to wait a while for pre-own to appear.

If you do decide that you want to stretch to 65 for an Up/Down, I would save another 10k and get a used Datograph Perpetual in Platinum.

Arnaud, the 1815 chrono would be a good alternative to the Dato with a significant discount.

For me they make the perfect Lange pair! I love the Dato and it wears great on my 7 1/2 inch wrist. I chose it over the new platinum Up Down as well and money had nothing to do with it. To each his own but my two cents owning both they are two amazing watches that anyone would love! Cheers,

I think Lange makes great watches but I'd choose PP over Lange pretty much every time, Lange makes nicer movements but PP just has something 'more'.
A friend of mine recently graduated watchmaking school and is now a CW21 and has a job at Lange at age 19, now I wouldn't let that go if it would be offered to me

Well Roger I like the PC a lot also, but to be honest even if they were at the same price I think I would still take the Dato, I just love that black dial with PT case, here are pics of both and yes the Dato PC is a beauty but just doesn't sing to me as much as the Dato does

Mark the problem is I need to have a date, so of course I would love to have a Zeitwerk even it doesn't have the date, but if there was Zeitwerk with and without date I would definitely take the date model

Exactly these 2 are the duo to have from Lange, I saw they did a 200 LE of the Zeitwerk in platinum, and for me the Dato needs to be in PT, it's the iconic Dato, platinum with that black dial. If ever I win the lottery these 2, along with a few Patek, are sure to be purchased very soon after winning $$$$$$$$$$$

So Ken you say that you prefer the 39mm Datograph, I have a 6.7 wrist which is very flat, I don't care for the PR, but am worried that the 39mm will sit too high on my wrist, need to try one on some day, the 41mm is even thicker but not by much and the 41mm rubs out that thickness, in any case the only Dato I saw was the PC, and I found it great, if I find it sits ok then it would be great as I am ok to one day put 40K into a Dato, but 65K not really.

I knew you had them but as I understand you sold them right? It was because they sat too high or was there another reason?

I'm seriously thinking what could take the place of my 5726 that I am flipping, never fell in love with it as I did for the 5712, and the Dato, 39mm, is in the list of contenders, even if I'm not a big chrono guy it's a beauty, the big date and movement makes it a winner for me...

Of course Bas PP as a whole has something more no doubt about it, but for the Zeitwerk nothing in pp can compare, and for the datograph for me it wins over 5070, 5170; etc

I had the platinum ZW and sold it and now have the WG one which I much prefer given the color combo. I also just got this original Dato and it is actually a new old stock never worn until now. All Lange's are thick given their extensive movements. I owned the original Dato years ago and also the Double Split but now as I wear this again realize it is perfect. I tried on the new Up down and made decision to go with this as in platinum it is the one for me. I also ordered new RG one which will be a once in the while watch but original plat my more of a daily wear. So to each his own and for me nothing like the original Dato and WG ZW! For me they make the prefect Lange duo and with platinum grand Lange 1 moonphase the perfect Lange trio!

And by the way for the record as an owner of many Patek and Lange the quality of Lange is second to none and actually surpasses Patek as far as I am concerned. When I put the Dato next to 5070 the Dato is just so much more substantial. Every Lange is 100% hand made and one watchmaker is with the watch from start to finish. Every part is hand finished and no two movements are alike as the watchmaker hand engraves them. They are truly works of art and I love the fact that they only make 4,000 watches a year.

I am surprised how close in size the 39mm Dato looks against the Zeitwerk 41+mm! Does the height difference help?

Well on Chrono 24 there is a BNIB in 39mm but for 64K, a BNIB 41mm is more or less 75K, a mint one is at 37K, I like my watches new but between 64K and 37K I choose the 37K one

Arnaud: The one for $37k is not complete and Chrono24 is a truly bad source IMHO for true prices and watches. The market for original Dato is $45K - $47K for mint complete one. I can tell you the day I posted mine on IG a dealer in La offered me $45K for it which of course I turned down. I have been looking for perfect Dato for years on and off and know the real market quite well.

Love ALS! The 39mm platinum Dato is a heavy watch. IMO the small (tall) case size and heavy weight make for an unbalanced watch on my 6.5" wrist. I think the larger case helps stabilize the watch for a better balanced watch (on a small wrist). Of course it's less of an issue on bigger wrists.



Have to get me that WG ZW someday.

Yes Ken I know it's missing the box, but honestly if I pay 10K less because there is no box I'm more than ok, I figure if you ever want to sell it later you can always score a box, and it's from Markus Tchopp from Mercurius trading inc, I got a limited edition Pam through him, he was advertising as 99% new, it was the Pam 082 in titanium, the watch was 100% new, it had clearly never been put even once, so if he says on this one 96% new I think it must be in great condition, sure you see it's been worn and is starting to develop a patina, I don't know about you but even if I never had a plat watch I had 2 rings in platinum, but very large and totally flat, Love from Cartier and 1 from Vuitton, don't remember the model name, I also had the Love in WG, yeah I know stupid buying the same ring in PT and in WG, anyways after 2 years I thought the WG one looked awful, the scratches were really not nice so I had it polished and rodhiumized free, now you need to pay but before once a year they did it free, all this to say is that never polished or wanted to, the 2 PT rings I had, the nice thing about PT is that the scratches are ok, WG not so nice.

One thing which bothers me with WG pieces is that it's going to look not very nice after a few years, so if you need to polish it often it would stop me…

Mike I have 6.5 also, and they it is very flat, so you think it will also fit not great on me? I suppose the answer is obvious and is better not…

I tried the Dato PC not long ago, 41mm, even if it wears smaller, wore nicely, but even in 41mm I must say it is and seems thick, anyways nothing like trying them in real life, not super easy since one is discontinued

Would have a hard time getting a rhodium piece, they don't show the scratches very nicely, whereas PT tends to get a patina, I would probably never polish a PT watch, do you guys polish your PT watches?

It is actually missing boxes, books and papers which are stamped in books and likely reason it has sat for a long time unsold. Personally I wouldn't buy an incomplete watch at that level as if you ever change your mind and want to sell you will lose market for most collectors.

For me with 7.5 inch wrist it is perfect and doesn't move at all!

I tried on the Dato in NYC and was disappointed it was so high on the wrist -- the dial is my grail watch, but it's just too fat.

I also recently tried the IWC Spitfire, very nice, but also fat (15.5 mm).

The Lange 1815 is much better suited to my wrist, though I prefer the Dato to look at.
